This is my long promised play station 2 review.
If you have not yet bought a playstaion 2 please go get one. Here are some details about the system and the games on ps2 that you can buy in India. And this is the cheapest way to play games in India.
Play station 2 was a gaming console launched by Sony in year 2000, so its not that old. Now you can buy this console modded for 7000 Rs at any of the black market place or on ebay or even on shopping.indiatimes.com. At that price you get a console with a dual shock and the power and TV cables and a cd for online play. Setting it is as easy as hooking up your DVD player to TV. The Console is bit smaller than the regular DVD player. Once you hook it up you put in a game cd and you play, its as simple as that. The games you can buy will cost your around 40 Rs in black market the only place that I have seen that sell these games. Can you imagine 40 Rs for a game. Some of the cd’s don’t work sometimes so get into good understanding with the seller so that you can return the bad cd’s and get replacements.
The graphics look really cool if you have played dreamcast its similar to that but you get quite a lot of games to select from. Some fo the games are really cool. Below i have given my best game or the games that you should definitely check out.
The accessories there are quite a few of them but the first one is memory card without which you can’t save your games you can get 16mb and 32 Mb cards. 16 Mb is fine for most people you can save like 20 games or so. Then there is a remote controller that can be used for controlling the player while watching DVD’s which didn’t work on my ps2. Then there is a camera called eye toy which can be used for playing some simple games and the steering wheel which can be used in games. All of the are available and at very good prices. Memory card for 16 Mb cost 800 Rs, the remote cost 300 Rs, the steering wheel cost 1500 Rs and the eyetoy costs around 2500 Rs with a games cd. There are some more acceries like keyboard and mouse and a Linux kit but I am not going into that.
Some of the things you should take note while buying your Playstation, make sure its moded with a chip otherwise you will not be able to play the 40 Rs games. Most them you buy will be moded but make sure to ask them. Playstation 2 also works as a DVD player mine doesn’t so check that out before you buy. I am not sure why this is happening may be because it was modded.
About the online play i have not tired it but the consoles comes with a Ethernet port so you can hook it up to your broadband line and you get a cd to get your started. But its so much fun playing single player you will not have time to play multi player. Get a extra controller for 250 Rs and play with your friend which will be more fun than online playing.
There are still games being released for the game so its not a dead console yet. This is the cheapest way to play games in India. Even a good graphic card cost more than 8000 Rs. And the games cost like 2000 Rs.
So why are you waiting go get one and if you want to play the best games get these games.

I think its same for all the playstation 2When i bought my memory card they didn’t ask for which one so i am assuming that its same forall of them.Just buy a 8 mb one it would be more than enough for all the game saves and its cheaper too.prasanth
Hey Prasanth,I was gifted a PS2 by a friend who had no clue about getting it moded with a chip etc. As a consequence I cant run a single pirated game. What do you suggest ? I live in Bandra, Mumbai and dont want to leave my console for 1-2 days with anyone to get it moded ?
It does not take that long to mod a ps2. If you take to theblack market or the place where they sell these. I don’twhere that place in mumbai is but ask around. i think itssome where in andheri.They will do it within hours.the place i went they said they could do it within 30 minutes in chennai.And the price i think was around 1000 Rs or so.I bought my ps2 modded so don’t know the exact cost.

Last week I bought a 16 mb SONY memory card and the PS2 browser displays it but the games do not save – I keep getting ‘save failed’. So watch out before you buy the 16 mb cards, stick to the 8 mb ones..I also heard that these 16 mb cards are like add-ons and need a 8 mb card in the first slot..any thoughts,anyone? sourcearun@gmail.com
Why waste your money on a 16mb card.i have tried more than 20 games and all the save are savedon 8mb and its still not full. So its better to go for 8mb rather than16 mb.price is also a lot cheaper.
Hi Prasanth,I just wanna ask how to play online in a ps2?
The ps2 comes with a online boot cd of some sort.There is a network jack behind the ps2 where yourbroadband connection will go.Once you hook the network cable to that port behindthe ps2 put the free online cd that came with the ps2.and follow the intrustion on screen.The online play is not up to the mark like those ofxbox 360 and others.So don’t expect super online support.

Go to mount road and look for a bata shop which its near to a theatre.Opposite to the bata shop there is street where they sell all kind of electronic goods. In that street look for a places that sells console game systems etc.And you can ask the guys at the shop if xbox modding is available.For ps2 they asked like 1000 Rs. and they said it would be done in few hours.

God of war 2 was released on March 13, 2007. so give it a month or so and it should come to the shops near you. It takes time, a month or so should be good enough.

I don’t know the name of the place but its near the bangalore bus station just before you go to the bus station there is a area called burma bazaar you can ask around once you are in the area. Its a building with small shops that sell all kind of electronics. Any auto driver in the area should know about it.

Hello Prashanth, I have got GOW2 DVD now but it is not working well in the area called great chasm in the game the DVD get stuck. Many of my friends facing the same problem I heard that so many other people are facing the same problem. I have tried 3 more copies from different shops but it won’t work at all. One of my friend told me that there are some vendors who sold Malaysian pirated copies of PS2 games which runs without any disturbance. Can you tell me any good vendor in Mumbai of malaysian copy DVDs of PS2 ?

I have not played god of war 2. i played the god of war 1 but didn’t like it that much. i am more into shooters, if you too are, try a game called black.Since you tried this same game from other places you should have same problem no matter where you buy it from.i am from south india so have no idea where to go to buy these games in mumbai. try the places that sell the consoles most of them also sell games.sorry for lack information

On the packaging of the dvd which are working look for the tv format, it should be PAL or NTSC. From now on buy only the format that work with your tv. Or you can change the tv set which is not an option so that’s out of the question. So all you can do is find out what format your tv is and when you buy games check and see on the dvd if they are the same format too.

The model of TV is not available on the Sony website. In India it should be PAL version. So buy only those DVD’s. The other problem could be scratches or bad DVD, check that too when buying. Because they are sold without jewel cases they are bound to get scratches.

no idea where in hyderabad. try the black market or burma bazaar in that city. Usual the auto drivers know these places so ask them to take you their. Just ask where you can get electronic items etc and there you can find these games.

Hi Prasanth,Interesting review, here are my thoughts on your write up.I’m not totally in agreeance with your straight off the bat call to ‘forget’ any of the next generation consoles, I feel they have alot more to offer, not just superior gaming but also work well as entertainment centres. I appreciate the PS2 is significantly cheaper, not only to purchase but to run, however it comes back to that old saying of you get what you pay for.You say the PS2 was released in 2000 and therefore it is not old, from the date of this article it would make the PS2 over 6 years old, I would say, that makes it significantly old, especially in the computing/technology field.You are quite correct that games are still being released for the PS2, that is because of articles like this that encourage people to buy older systems, the game developers want to produce games for the next gen consoles, however when the base of the PS2 is so big and still increasing it’s just too tempting for them to keep coding inferior and simple games, these kinds of attitudes, I believe do not help communities to progress forward in terms of having tech savvy appliances at home.You say a few times that the graphics are great on the PS2, I am curious as to what you are comparing this to? My feeling is that the PS2 graphics, especially when connected via the standard composite cables, is nothing short of ordinary, a good graphics card for a PC will cost 8000+ because they are capable of so much more, so much more than even the current PS3, XBOX360 and of course Wii, comparing the cost of a high performance, lone graphics card against a 6 year old outdated game console is hardly an appropriate comparison. On top of that LCD monitors and TV’s are becoming more and more commonplace, having a next generation console will enable the user to take full advantage of the graphics performance from these superior machines.Also make no mistake, unlike the XBOX360, the PS3 launch has been somewhat of a flop for Sony, so they are milking the PS2 for everything it’s worth, while this may be advantageous for PS2 users in the short term it will only accomplish the move to next generation, and with it a far superior entertainment experience, to be heavily delayed, not just locally, but globally.You also discourage online play, online play is the future of gaming, I find playing games by myself quite boring, sometimes very quickly, however when I am playing online, particularly with people I know well, it’s great fun, and usually has me playing for a longer time, this really is where the XBOX360 excels.I can see by the comments that your review has helped people in their decision on what to buy, and that’s great, however from my standpoint, what I’m getting from your review is that the PS2 is the option to go for if you wish to play pirated games, graphically inferior and have the gamble of getting a console that doesn’t even function properly, of course no warranty in these situations. Yesterday(Dec 4th,07) I bought a new compact modded PS2 from Ritchiestreet chennai. The charcoal black colour ones were selling at Rs6000while the milk white and ash silver ones were Rs 200 to Rs500 more. Ibought the white for Rs6200 since I was told that recent batches of blackhad complaints. Modded consoles don’t carry warrenty but can play copiedgames(Rs.30-Rs50 each). Unmodded PS2 console comes with 1 yr gaurenteeand costs about Rs.6900 but remember that it plays only expensiveoriginal disks!!. Extra Sony Controller Rs.200/- 16MB Memory card Rs400 toRs500 (8MB was Rs300), multitap adapter for upto 4 extra controllersRs200, carry bag -Rs300. So these are the actual current prices – sodon’t get taken for a ride. For the average guy this is a great buyespecialy since so many games are available on PS2. By the way , I am toldthat Sony will be coming out with an even more compact(with power adapterincorporated into console body) and cheaper PS2 for about US$99, in2008.Also The Nintendo Wii is great but currently available in Chennai forRs19k modded- too expensive.

The price are so cheap now don’t get it modded. just buy the non moded one from sony or where ever its cheaper. You will get other features like network play etc. games are also so cheap so get the non moded version. you get the 1 year warranty and network play which you will enjoy. Sony ps3 is 3 times more but if you can offered sony ps3 is the gaming console to buy now.
Ps2 is good buy too now because of the prices, you can even find used games for fraction of the price.

Get a unmodded one and you will get network play and 1 year warranty. Buy top 10 games for ps2 and have fun. if you want cheaper games look for used games many people are selling their ps2 and going to ps3.
so you will get quite cheap used games, modded version is not worth it.

Try and see if any bundles are available buy them if they are cheap. You need memory card for the game saves, if you want to save a stage in game you need memory card even a small 8 mb one is fine. Its only saving the stage info in the memory which is very small even with a 8 MB memory card you can save many games.
Other accessories are a eye toy camera and mic for a singing game.
There is also a multi tap accessorie thats useful, if you want to connect 3-4 users to a ps2. which is very rare, not many games support that many players, its mostly 2 players.
There are not many games available for eye toy camera, so i think its not worth your investment. same goes for the mic only 1 or 2 games are supported.
So buying the console and a memory card should be fine.
how s the graphics of ps2 by the way..dont compare it with ps3..if i play in lcd tv rathr than crt tv will it improve the quality of graphics..if not then what wil hapen..how will the call of duty look..the same way as it usd to luk in computers.?
Ps3 is high def and ps2 is not. Its not bad graphics but they are as good as on computers. I don’t think playing it on a lcd or crt wouldn’t make much of a difference, both of them you kind of get same quality.
call of duty will look the same but it will play smoother because its exactly made for ps2 hardware. Unlike the computer which have so many different hardware configurations.
You can play games without having to worry about updates and drivers etc. graphic mostly depend on game on game basis. Best looking game when i played was soul caliber for ps2

Not really if you have a big screen like a 40 inch etc. it will look blurry because the image is stretched. If you are playing anything below 28 inch it should be fine. Ps2 was not meant for big screen tv gaming. Best option would be 28 inch tv, crt tv’s are very cheap at that size.

As i said before ps2 is meant for gaming so you can play games smoothly unlike computers. No distractions etc just gaming and if this is your first console you will enjoy.
If you still have any doubts go to any big mall they have ps2 demo systems to play with and see for yourself how smooth and cool they still are.

Some games you have to finish a level to get a save point. other games you can save anywhere. it depends on each game. Most only allow saving after each level. There you don’t even have to save it, its automatically saved. next time rather than starting a new game just load from the save point.
By making levels as save points you don’t have to remember to save when ever you end the game. It done automatically you will appreciate it once you get good at games.

Ridge racer is the only one i remember playing. I am more of first person shooter fan, call of duty was the one i loved playing.
