Since I have written the title as cheapest pc. First I should tell you the price. Its wait for it 8000 Rs. That’s for everything monitor, CPU, keyboard, mouse, speakers etc.And the next question you will ask is what are the configurations.Intel Celeron Processor – 299 MHzRam – 128 MBHard Disk – 10 GBMonitor – 14 inchesComes with internal modem, three usb ports, headphone jack and an Ethernet port.
You will have to buy an external cd drive, mouse and keyboard I have included the price of these in the above mentioned price of 8000 Rs. You buy them at the same company too.
After reading these specification do not think this is an underpowered pc. I use Internet, watch movies through external drive and play games. I can run GTA2 and commandos 2 etc. So it’s quite a good pc, in fact I am writing this blog also from this pc.
All this comes in a very nice package.So lets start the review. I saw this thing first in an ad in the recently stopped reading computer magazine Digit. The price was 6500 Rs. I was a bit skeptical, but decided to buy one. The first thing that knocked me of my feet was that the computer itself is like the colored imac but only available in blue color. It’s all in one pc so no more worrying about two things like CPU and monitor etc. It comes with a 1-year warranty too.
These pc were meant for some other country I think, so you will get a odd looking keyboard with odd characters which you can use but it will not work well if you are using games etc. The keyboard has no functions keys. So you need to buy a keyboard and mouse. But if you want to use the same keyboard then you can download a software that helps to get the function keys back on their website. And the computer comes with 64 Mb ram which you can upgrade to 128 Mb for just 400 Rs. Which I did and that is the reason for writing 8000 Rs pc. You need to install the operating system yourself. I installed windows xp and everything is working fine.The best part of this pc is its size, since it’s an all in one pc it’s very compact so it will go well in any room. And it’s best for students when you want to move rooms or places you just need to carry one thing.it’s very good for single people. If you throw in an external TV card, you have a television and a computer at 10000 Rs.The computer also comes with a phone that sits on top, which can be used like a normal phone. You put the phone jack behind the pc and use it as a modem and pick up the phone and use it as a normal phone.
It also has a microphone on the top, I wish it were a camera. But still if you want to do voice chats etc. you can use that microphone which is built in on top of the monitor.I have been using this computer for a year now without any problems. This computer is the answer for all those who want a cheap and stylish pc at a very small price. Many people have asked me if it’s a mac. I even convinced few of them that it’s a mac by putting mac os themes on the pc.The fan of the pc is on top so you can put it close to the wall without worrying.
They have power button on the monitor so you just need to press one button to switch the computer on and off. They have also placed an usb and microphone jack on the side of the pc so it’s easier to plug it in and out.All in all a great pc for cheaper price. If you can find cheaper pc that is brand new them contact me.By the way you can get all the other things like keyboard, mouse, ram upgrade and an external cd drive for inside 8000 Rs at their shop itself. Hi Prashant,I have to admit, your blog pretty much sums everything about the Intel dot station.I am planning on buying one for my father as a low cost solution for minimum-intensity computing, browsing etc. I have a few questions and would be greatful if you could offer your opinion:1. I know for a fact that the Dot Station was launced sometime in 2000 and the production was stopped within a couple of years because it did not catch on that well in the US. One of the largest orders made was for South American countries(which is why they come with Spanish Linux). Now my question is, where does big apple find NEW Dot Stations almost 4 years later? Are these really new or used? The reason I am concerned about this is that, most of the time, the life of a monitor is limited and if it is already 4 or 5 years old? But this is not a major issue because I like the price and design. When the monitor goes, I might even find tools to replace the front with a LCD panel.2. How can one use this as a TV? An external TV card has to be connected to the Station right? Does the station come with a spare input port ?Thanks and Regards – Seth
The intel dot stations are brand new.I think intel made too many of these dot stations and couldn’t sell them.When you go to buy you can see they are brand new.About the monitor issues i have been using mine for an year now withoutany problem. If there is any problem. you can always buy a new pc. thewhole pc only cost as much as a new 14 inch CRT monitor.the third question, the pc comes with three usb ports one network port andan telephone jack. two of the ports are occupied by the keyboard and mouse.so you can use the third usb port to hook up external tv card.Other wise you can buy a port extender for 500 Rs that adds four more usb ports.Since this pc only cost 7000 Rs if there is any problem you can just buy a newone. With normal pc if you want to change even a monitor or hard disk or anythingyou would end up paying this much.A good graphic card costs more than this pc.

I went in and bought a .station last saturday from BigApple chennai.Was advertised for 6995Upgraded to : 1Ghz celeron, 128 mg RAM, 300 bucks for XP, MSOffinstalled.Which pushed up the cost to about 8700.I have been toying with it for the past week. It looks brand new andcute.With the original Spanish manuals. (I know spanish to a decent extent,so itwas fun showing off to my family/ friends
)Performs well enough, looks cute, speakers sound good, the mike worksgoodtoo.I had PS2 mouse / keyboard pair lying around. So I spent 90 bucks on acable- USB to 2 PS2. That leaves me 2 USB ports for other stuff.I have a lan setup here already linked with cable-broadband. I was abletoget the .station onto the highway in no time.It has been fun to work with so far.Spending another 1500 or so on the tuner card will make the unitcomplete.Only problem is that once complete, I willl probably like it so muchthat Iwont have the heart to give it off to my father.

just bought it.and been satisfied so far.only problem is that when i connected the keyboard,it gave a message saying that hardware you are trying to install has not passed the windows logo testing.by the way,my os is windows xp.
Usually if you click continue anyway it should work fine.Or just buy a new keyboard that works with xp.Because i am also using my pc with a new keyboardand it detects and works fine.So just try a new keyboard or just click continue anywayand you should be fine.
hi,i am having problems with some messages popping up saying that my system is infected with spyware.however when avg free edition scans it says that no theats found and that system is working just fine.also the volume window does not close if opened and if clicked on just keeps opening multiple windows.please advise.start up page has also changed automatically to http://www.iesecurity.com and which says system is infected and that my browsing is being tracked.
From the information you gave me it looks like a spyware.go to this page http://www.lavasoftusa.com/download_and_buy/product_comparison_chart.phpand download the free version of ad-aware and scan your system.also got to http://www.spybot.info/ and download spybot searchand destroy and do the scan.you need internet connection because these programs will try toup date their logs.if these don’t work try this free virus program toohttp://www.clamwin.com/Never rely on one program to catch all the viruses.
hi prasanth once again,i have already run a spybot 1.4 scan and it did come up with some files to be deleted.still the start up page always changes to the one mentioned.is there any way i can deactivate this,also what are vthe problems i could be facing if i decide to ignore these issues.by the way,the solutions offered for e.g spyheal etc is discredited by my system if i try to download.

hi prasanth,i wanted to know how do i use the function key download?
the software converts the top keys on the keyboard that comeswith intel dot station to function keys.but its easier to get a new key board.i have not tried it i just replaced it with a new keyboard which youcan get for 250 Rs or so. you will also need a mouse so add another150 more. i have mentioned this above in the blog too.
i have bought one.the problem is: whether it can be boot with an external usb cdrom?the telephone provided is not working by connecting it at its usual socket.i have connected telephone line to the modem.i could not understand its actual
Yes you can boot it usb cdrom because that is how i installed xp on it.About the telephone first plug the phone line into the modem line. then take the phone cable that comes with the pc and connect it to the phone which is on top of the pc and the other end of that will go on the side where you have speakers and extra usb port.The phone should work, its works like normal phone not as a voip phone. you can’t use it when the modem is being used. try it.
