14000 Rs Laptops from HCL

Mileap HCL LaptopThis seems very interesting, all the laptop makers are now looking into ultra portables. So HCL is planning to launch a laptop for 14000 Rs. It will be similar to the OLPC, it will not have a windows os but Linux and will have wifi and will be dust and shock proof. It has network ports and other data card options. Very interesting product, which they are planning to launch on January 26th. Can’t wait to see the spec, could this be the thing that will get laptop in to millions of house holds in India.

Imagine if one of the wireless data card providers offers this laptop under some scheme. They could have a huge business. We will see how it goes.

Macworld 2008 impact on us in india

None of the announcements at macworld have significance in India.

Airport extreme is too pricey at 11000 Rs just in usa. if that comes to India it will 15000 Rs, who would pay that kind of money for a wireless hub and an external hard disk.

The itunes store is not in India so forget about movie rentals etc. Why doesn’t Steve jobs start itunes store in India, forget about the business from India. Just imagine the amount of content he will get if he puts a store in India. Which he could sell in other countries. All the companies in India will be more than willing to put them online just looking at the overseas market.

Apple tv same problem no itunes store in India

iphone updates you can read my other blog post and see that also have very less impact in India because iphone in India has not been official released.

Macbook Air looks cool, Steve could have gotten a lot more order if he got the price to under $800 or so. But with the price of $1800 it will be around 72000 add at least 15000 in taxes and you have 100000 Rs laptop. i don’t think anyone can justify that price for a laptop that will have just the basic features.

Steve said during the movie rental thing that he would love to do it all over the world pretty soon. And mentioned aisa too so there is some hope.

Why is Steve jobs ignoring the Indian market is beyond me.

Until that happens this macworld significance in India.

Iphone firmware 1.1.3 should you upgrade in India

If you are an iphone user like me hold on to the temptations for a few more months. Until someone jailbreaks the new firmware.

There is nothing that cool in the new firmware at least if you are in India.

Maps will not work, because the maps in India are very bad at best. so the find me option will not work in India. And i t think triangulation with cell towers will only work when apple officially releases iphone in India.

Lyrics in ipod : Most of the Indian songs you have on the iphone will not have lyrics, so it will not be much of use to you.

Web clips : will work but really do you want to put icons to site you go to on your home screen not that exciting to me at least.

Multiple user Sms, seriously how can that be a feature. There is already an app that does multiple user sms on iphone

Changing the order of icons on home screen : that seems cool but that is the only good one. For that one feature do you want to risk bricking your iphone.

here are some alternative that will do the same thing for you if you know how to install apps on the iphone

Lyrics: use a program called tunewiki to get the lyrics while playing songs. here too most of the Indian songs won’t work, but the English songs work. i have tried it.

customize icons on iphone home screen you can’t drag them like the new firmware, but you can put them into categories with nice icons and give them names like games, apps etc. i am using. this and it is much nicer than the new moving icons thing.

So hold on and wait for the next firmware.

2008 predictions, hoping they will come true

These are the predictions i think will happen or hope they happen in 2008

Technology : Something even special from apple than the iphone. I think there will some new laptop that everyone on the planet will want. More online stuff from Microsoft. They are better at stuff if they put their minds to it. Look at the Live write its the best blog writer out there. So hoping they will do many more such exciting things. Other online stuff will be the same, i don’t expect any new big things like Facebook. Most of the sites will try to consolidate their user base. You will see a lot of uproar on privacy as these sites try to lock down. I expect amazon to do a lot this year, they have started offering software as downloads for sale now and already have the best DRM free Mp3 store. Many companies will try hard but will not be able to beat the iphone’s onslaught.

Sports: Real Madrid look stronger as a team and they will win the league and the Champions Leagues this year. The Australian cricket team will continue its winning ways. India will again struggle at least with one or two big name retirements. Olympics in China will be marred with protest and drug scandals.

Politics: The Iraq quagmire will continue. The politically situation will get worse around the world as you saw in Kenya as the stakes in politics go up. Pakistan will still struggle with democracy. Democrats will win in America, it will be Hillary Clinton.

Climate: Expect more proof from mother nature about Climate Change.

Economy: USA will find it hard to get back to its glory days as other countries catch up to it. Elections will only add to the distraction.

Gaming: Microsoft will at least announce their next gaming console. The wii will get a better version. Sony ps3 will finally come to the ring for the real fight.

Movies: Movies will struggle to get audiences due to piracy and lack of interest. More animated stuff will rule the roost.

Television: If the writers strike continues it will be hard to tell. But it will be sorted out soon and we will be able to sit our lazy ass again in front of our huge ass tv’s.

Music: More non mainstream music will come on to the top charts. Apple will also play a major role in this.

We will wait and see how my predictions will go. Chime in with your own.
