My hunt for Asus Eeepc in India

Asus Eeepc for 17900 Rs with taxes in india

I found about the launch of this 18000 Rs small laptop in India by Asus in January 08. So I decided it would make a good gift for my nephew. So I went ahead trying to buy it. I thought it would be easy to get and went to the computer planet in Richie Street in Chennai which is a big store. But they had no idea about a laptop like this. Then I called the Asus sales representatives. But none of them could tell me where I could buy it, even though they tried very hard. Then finally the sales representative for south says I can’t get it because its out of stock or has not yet started shipping. Then he asked me to check out E-zones stores and Croma Stores which don’t have retail outlets in Chennai. So he finally gave the name of the dealer in Chennai, but he again said that the dealer doesn’t have the stock and I should call him after few days. But I called the dealer immediately and found that he had the asus eeepc in stock and the price was 17900 Rs with taxes. So finally after two days and many phone calls I bought the Asus Eeepc. Watch a review of it soon.

I bought it from Sethia Infotech in Richie street.

Here is their number if you want to buy one

In other places in India try the Croma Stores or the E-zones stores.

They don’t advertise them well and also don’t get them into computer shops. Then they complain that they can’t sell stuff. Imagine if someone trying to buy a cheap PC saw this in a store he would have second thoughts about getting a PC.

iphone can only have 144 app’s and webclips

If I am not mistaken you can only have 16 icons on screen and that too only on 9 virtual screens. Now do the match and you will have 144 app’s and webclips.

That’s a lot of app’s and webclips on a mobile device. Is apple trying to stop people from putting more or do they think that is a good number and people will not need more than that.

They could always make the screen move vertically but after seeing this UI change can you imagine going horizontally to the 3rd screen and then going down again vertically that seems painful and I think apple will not make such a UI change.

So 144 seems a good number to project.

Looking at all the things they are doing on the iphone the last thing they might want to do is make it complicated. So they will stick with the UI and limit people to 144 app’s.

They could always put a search feature like they have on their site which brings up the programs. But even that makes it complicated and I think they will not do that.

So 144 is the magic number, i have around 60 programs on m

Easiest way to upgrade iphone from any firmware

I had the 1.0.2 firmware and  I upgraded it to 1.1.3. You too can quite easily.

First thing you need to do if your iphone is unlocked and jail broken go to the installer app and get the Virginize app.

Here is how to virginise your iphone http://iphone.unlock.no.

How to "Virginize" the iPhone to repair the baseband?

Ignore all long and complex tutorials – I have set up a fully automatic script that will repair the baseband. This script will work on any baseband version, but will not work on phones with new bootloader (out of the box 1.1.2). It will not run on 1.1.2 firmware either, you need to downgrade to 1.1.1 or 1.0.x before running.

You would want to virginize if you upgraded to 1.1.1, and have 0049xxx IMEI. Check this in Settings → General → About.

Virginize instructions:
  1. Set Settings → General → Auto Lock → Never
  2. Start Installer and update it if it asks. Tap on Sources, Edit, and Add http://i.unlock.no/ as a repository.
  3. Make sure you have BSD Subsystem installed. If it’s installed it’s listed in "Uninstall", if not listed, tap on Install and goto the System category and install it.
  4. Now, install The Virginizer found in the Unlocking Tools category. This will take almost 10 minutes to complete.
  5. When done, restore your phone to get 1.1.1 firmware reinstalled (this is not necessary if you are going to upgrade to 1.1.2)
  6. When phone has been restored, you can Activate and unlock as normal.

You only need to do it if your firmware is older than 1.0.1 or 1.0.2.

Then enter recovery mode so that you can restore the firmware from itunes. Here is how to enter recovery mode from http://iphone.unlock.no

To enter recovery mode, connect the phone to the computer and press and hold the Power button (on top) and the Home button (on bottom front) simultaneously. After about 15 seconds phone will appear to turn off, release the Power button but keep holding the Home button. After about 15 seconds the computer and iTunes will detect the phone in recovery mode, and you can perform a restore.

Once you are in recovery mode just connect to itunes and click restore while holding the shift key down and itunes will ask you to select the file, now you can choose which ever version you want.

  • 1.0.0: iPhone1,1_1.0_1A543a_Restore.ipsw
  • 1.0.1: iPhone1,1_1.0.1_1C25_Restore.ipsw
  • 1.0.2: iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw
  • 1.1.1: iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw – 130 Mb approximately
  • 1.1.2: iPhone1,1_1.1.2_3B48b_Restore.ipsw – 90 Mb approximately
  • 1.1.3: iPhone1,1_1.1.3_4A93_Restore.ipsw – 160 Mb approximately
  • Here is the list of iphone firmware’s available from apple site. Download the version you want and select it when you restore and itunes will restore it. Don’t disconnect iphone while this is happening make sure power outage doesn’t happen. Use a PC with ups or use a laptop.

Once its done iphone reboots and shows you the activate screen go and download the ziphone program. Its a 1 Mb or so download. Once downloaded unzip and run the ziphone.exe file and select all the three options of unlock, activate, jailbreak and it will do the rest. Once its finished you should have a iphone that is updated jail broken activated and unlocked.

If this fails for you can always go back and restore to a older firmware.

Iphone user don’t be left behind

If you have a firmware 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 then upgrade. At least go for 1.1.2 if you don’t want to get 1.1.3. You will be too far behind if you keep waiting.

Just a few days back I updated my iphone to 1.1.3 from 1.0.2 because I was worried soon people will stop making way to upgrade from that firmware and I will be left behind. So at least go to 1.1.2 which seems quite stable and works with all the app’s etc.

1.1.3 doesn’t work well with the app’s etc. Many app’s are not yet compatible with 1.1.3,

Not only that there is already talk about 1.1.4 being released by the end of this month when apple releases SDK.

So upgrade or you will get left behind.

I just visit two sites from India

The headline tells a story. The only two sites i visit in India are Rediff.com and Techtree.com.

Rediff for the news, not the best in any sense but its just easier and quicker to load.

Techtree for the prices of gadgets that they review. Which usually are at the end of the reviews and at least off quite a bit of what we can get in the market. I check so that i get an idea at what price not to buy that product.

    Thats it.

Am i the only one, what others sites do you visit. I occasionally go to some shopping sites other than that all the sites i go to are international.

That is a bad sign for the Indian internet community. There is no compelling site out there that i need to visit everyday in India at the moment. Most of the sites just borrow news from their international counterparts or are just static pages that are never updated.

Unless someone seriously comes up with some good content you will not see me on any Indian sites.

If you have some recommendations or sites i should check out let me know.

Internet slows in India because sea cable cuts

when i saw the stories online i thought seriously this will slow me down.

Internet is always slow in India even if the cables were not cut. So we wouldn’t know the difference. Most people would think that its just another Indian isp internet problem day. Here if internet is down it will take time to fix it. So even it was out for a week or so most people would still think it was some problem with their isp.

No one would even consider thinking that may be the internet backbone has some problem. That’s because the internet we get in India is always slow and riddled with choppy connections.

All this news have done is given the isp’s an excuse to tell customers for a few months.

Why is apple holding on to copy, paste on iphone

Iphone copy and pasteThe simple answer is they want one feature that will make everyone update their firmwares without thinking.

And that one feature is copy and paste. They will add it when they release the SDK. So that everyone updates their iphones and apple can control who gets to put apps on iphone.

It all makes sense, people will upgrade without thinking if apples adds copy and paste to the iphone. In the process apple can introduce some strict measure so that only they can install apps on iphone. At least that is why they are holding on to that feature. They don’t know that iphone application key has been leaked on the internet already.

And here are some of my speculations on how this features will be implemented. Are you seriously going to start a rumor about how this feature will be implemented. I sure am.

I think it will be similar to the home screen jiggly thing. Once you press and hold your finger for a while on any text. You will get a magnifying glass but this time it will be colored yellow and when you move it all the text where it was moved to will be highlighted in yellow and copied on to clipboard. Then just press and hold where you want to paste and it will paste. Let see what apple will come up with. My implementation seems quite user friendly.

The highlighted text color could be Grey or Blue too.

Auto majors target Indian campuses for designers

Tata NanoThis is interesting, if you look at all the vehicles that are on Indian roads design is the last thing that will come to your mind.

But it will be interesting to see what this will do to indian automobile sector. The only guy known for the his car design in India at the moment is DC.

But so far we have not seen anything that is mass market from him. Hope Indian companies too look into these campuses and come up with new designs. Has anyone even designed the Nano, that thing is one ugly peice of vehicle. Cheap doesn’t mean ugly people.

There is hope for a stylish future.
