Apple decides the iphone price in India says Airtel

I just read this article that said, its apple who decided what the price would be and not the carriers. Airtel also says that they don’t make any money from the sale of the iphone. All the money they make is from the mobile service they provide for the iphone.

So apple is trying to make all the profit in the sale of the iphone because they will not be getting any cuts from the mobile service providers. Then why go this root, why not just sell it unlocked to all carriers. All would love to put this phone in their stores.

If apple really want any market share in India they have to bring the iphone price below 15000 Rs.

Not Airtel, but Apple decides iphone prices in India

Super Hi-Vision in works and we still can’t get HD

In India even if you buy a HDTV its not much of use other than hooking your gaming consoles to play in HD. None of the broadcasters do HDTV at the moment.

Hopefully DTH providers will soon provide HD dishes and set top boxes. Cable providers are hopeless in deploying the current broadcasts so HD is out of question.

But researchers are already developing Super Hi-Vision which they claim will be 16 times more sharper and detailed than current HD.

Secure your wifi with these tips

I was surprised to find such nice tips to secure your wifi on cnn ibn’s website.

Even if you can’t follow all the tips there. Just changing the default router user name and password and password protecting your wifi will help you a lot.

I know keeping it open helps other users, but its not worth the trouble it will get you into.

Password protecting your wifi network is easy do a Google search and you will get the details.

To change router settings just go to 192.168.1.1 in your browser and that should bring up the router settings. From there you can easily change the default password and also put a password on your wifi.

Once you log in with a password to the wifi access point the password in remembered and you don’t need to type it again. So implementing this is easy to use to.

As if there are not enough players in DTH, Airtel is now launching into DTH service. They are also looking into iptv but not through DTH and only in some cities.

So lets add one more company with the same channels and still nothing interesting to watch. Its Thursday night and I have nothing interesting to watch on TV, fix that first.

Bsnl ups speed of unlimited broadband for home

I recently was checking the bsnl site and found that bsnl was offering higher unlimited broadband speeds at twice the price of previous connection for home users.

They are offering unlimited 512 kbps for 1350 per month for home users. I went ahead and got an account.

And I have to say its a please to surf at these speeds. I can’t wait for the days of 1 mbps or 8 mbps.

If you are not good with number here is how good the speed is. You can watch a you tube video without buffering. Before with the 256 kbps you had to wait for the video to pre load. Now with this new connection you can watch you tube without buffering.

You get around 60 kb speeds. Its takes around 1 minute to download 3 Mb. In 9 hours I download 1.25 Gb (I download a lot of video podcasts by the way).

So all I can say is go get one and have fun.

Its sad state of affairs when other competitors can’t even come close to competing with the bsnl.

None of the other providers give speeds like this at this price point. See for yourselves Reliance, Airtel etc.

Iphone from bsnl with 3G by December

According to the reports recently. Iphone could be coming soon to BSNL. Which is great because BSNL offer an unlimited data plan for pre paid customers.

Unlimited data plan is a must if you want to use the iphone fully. So its a good news that bsnl will be getting the iphone with 3G service soon. Bsnl are the only providers who give unlimited data plan at the moment.

I am currently using the iphone with bsnl pre paid sim with unlimited data plan. The only thing I miss with bsnl is the roaming facility. I have to pay by the usage when I am roaming. I would pay twice what I pay or even around 600 Rs per month for a unlimited data plan that works any where in India even when roaming.

Hope bsnl fixes that when they release iphone with bsnl.

Anil Ambani looking into buying Newcastle

Anil Ambani buying newcastle club They just refused a rumor that Anil Ambani group is looking into buying Newcastle. Here is something interesting they also say.

‘We have not expressed interest in Newcastle. There is nothing in the latest stories. It’s a non-starter. As of now there is no interest, although I cannot speculate on what may be the future plans of my management.’

It would be cool if he could buy a English premier league club. At least we can cheer a team with something in it for us. Russians and Saudis own English premier league clubs so why not an Indian.

Hope this goes through and we all could cheer for Newcastle.

I don’t think he should invest in India football, instead if he buys this club, he should try and get Baichung Bhutia a chance to play for Newcastle. That way many youngsters will get inspired and get into football in India.

Then they can invest in Indian Football.

Google chrome my review

google chrome browser review

Last night I downloaded goggle’s new browser. Its only 7 Mb download which was good. But it took a while for me to download on the slow dial up connection I had. I guess many people might have been downloading it.

So what do i have to say about the chrome browser. Its fast, loads fast almost as quick as the ie or better. And it looks very simple as you can seen from the screen shot. I have enabled the bookmark bar, if it was not enabled it would look even simple which is really cool by the way.

The webpages loads fast so far i have not seen a single site that had issues with the browser. The digg.com loads very fast compare to other browsers. Most of the other sites load quickly and its not an issues.

It remembers password and in a good way. Only once you successfully log into an account will it ask you if you want to save the password.

There is no bookmark manager but you can drag them on to the bookmark bar and rename them make folders etc.

Things i love about Chrome.

Its size, only 7 Mb and its simple and clean UI.

It has a task manager to see which tab is taking how much memory etc.

If one tab crashes only that tab has to be close not the whole browser.

You can see history as a webpage with timings and date neatly laid out. In fact the best way to look at history of your browsing on any browser.

The main page is done write. It automatically loads the 9 most visited sites in the main page. You don’t have to add them like opera. There is no way to edit or remove them, which is fine with me.

All in all i love this browser. My only issue is Google reader doesn’t work. I login and it goes to that page but nothing loads. Its works fine on other browsers so i am not sure what the issues is. Hope it gets fixed soon.

Other things like gmail etc work great. You can also save a short cut to any site on your desktop. And return to it when you click that shortcut. This turns Google chrome into an application.

You can log into gmail and make a shortcut for it and close the browser. Next time you click that shortcut it takes directly to your inbox. The browser in which its opens is clean, it doesn’t show address bar or anything just your mail. Which makes it like an application for all your web stuff.

You can save a shortcut to a your Google document and put in on your desktop or start menu. Next time you click that link it takes you directly to the document if you have not signed out.

This feature alone makes it the best thing since slice bread. With this feature you can official switch to Google docs from Microsoft word. You will never loose you documents and will have access to them any where you want. And using Google gears which comes with the browser you can even work offline.

Just select offline from the Google docs page and it will download all the documents and you can work offline. When you are done just connect and go online.

All in all a great browser my only request to Google is don’t add any more features and make it slow, big and ugly.

It has already become my default browser. I still keep safari, firefox and ie just in case.

Google’s new browser called Google Chrome

 googlechromebrowser

This morning Google announced that they will be releasing an open source browser to tomorrow called Google Chrome. It will be using the same web kit engine used in Safari but it will have a new java script engine called V8.

They say its built from scratch so it will be better able to cope with the current generations of web applications and sites.

I think it will be interesting to watch.

They are using the webkit which safari browser is also using. And the speed with safari is very good so the new Google browser will also be very fast.

Can’t wait to try out their new browser which will be available for download tomorrow from here.

At the moment my browser is Safari with the latest webkit. And its quite fast even on Airtel dial up. So I will be waiting for Google Chrome. Hope its not too big of a download. More screenshots of Google’s browser can be found here.

Google’s interesting way to market a new product

 googlechromecomic

Apple does how to videos to market their products. Google did a comic to market their new browser project called Google Chrome.

The comic has helped so much in giving all the details about the project. Why it will be a better browser than all the other out there.

And also why they are doing the way they are doing it.

Unlike Apple which tries to hide all the people who design and develop these products. Google puts all of them in their comic as characters explaining the product.

Special mention has to be given to the artist Scott McCloud who didn’t do a boring corporative presentation. Instead he did a wonderful comic with nice illustrations. I think no one could have explained a browser so interestingly. And he uses no color in the comic which is another compliment to him.

Google know the web and the people who use it. Geek’s love comics so it was a perfect blend. Hope many companies will adapt such marketing strategies so that we can better understand their reason for doing the way they are doing it.

If nothing we will get few free comics to read.

Read the whole comic here
