Don’t buy tata photon pocket wifi now

Tata photon are offering a new device that they are calling tata photon pocket wifi. Which is a router with a sim that gives your broadband speeds. This device is priced at 4999 Rs.What is the main feature of this device. This device acts a wifi hotspot and allows you to connect 5 different devices to internet. Why i am asking you to not buy this device now. They data plans are shit compared to BSNL 3G plans. Tata photon are offering the same plans they offered for Tata Photon Plus. So if that data wasn’t enough for you, now you can share the same connection with five more devices.Even their hardware is crap, the main selling point of this device is portability, so you would guess a router could at least last as long as the laptop battery lasts.

Has an in-built battery for a 2.5 Hrs operation

So if you are in the market for something like this a wifi router that is portable with an internet connection that you can carry. I have two solutions for you.1. Get a portable router that powers via usb, they are available for 3000 Rs. Get a BSNL 3G usb modem and hock that into the router and you have the same thing that is cheaper and lasts as long as the laptop battery. Bsnl have good data plans and especially an unlimited plan.

2. If you have a 3G usb data card like BSNL 3G or any others. You can share that connection via computer to other devices. Here is how i do it.I connect the BSNL 3G usb data card to my mac and turn on internet sharing in settings menu  -> sharing -> internet sharing. And now using the mac’s wifi i can connect any device that has wifi to internet. I know there are ways to do the same on windows too.So don’t buy the tata photon pocket wifi, wait till they come out with a good battery like (10 hours or more) and an unlimited plan like BSNL 3G.

  2. Sankar Garg says:

I am agreeing with what you wrote , but if a person have an apple (ipad 2 wifi) then in that case he doesnt have any other choice left other than buying Tata photon.

    • prasanth says:

Its cheaper to get a wired broadband connection and buy a wifi router. You can get much cheaper data plans with BSNL wired broadband.

700 Rs for unlimited data plan + 2000 Rs for wifi router. Or you can buy Type 2 Modem from BSNl which is 3000 Rs. its a modem and also a wifi router. Any of these plans are cheaper than Tata Photon wifi. With bsnl broadband you get unlimited data.

Even if you have a data card. For that too you can buy a wifi router which is around 3000 Rs.

So in any of these cases as you can see its cheaper to get a wifi router and a wired broadband connection.

Hi, can you please let me know on how to connect and use a Tata photon with an Ipad2 wifi (coz Ipad2 doesnt have a USB connection).I have bought an Ipad2 in USA and planning to use it in India when I am there next week. Also I already have a Tata photon.
      Appreciate ur help on this.
      Thanks,
      yogesh

        There are two options

1.Get a 3G WiFi router that supports data cards. You can get them for 3000 Rs, its a small modem like device, into which you can plug your tata photon card. Then use the WiFi on the router to connect to the internet on iPad. When you buy the 3G WiFi router take your tata photon data card and make sure it works with the 3G WiFi router before buying it. Plus is that you can use this router with other data cards too, in future if you get a different data ard.

        2. Second solution is if you have a PC you can connect to the data card on the PC and share the internet connection via WiFi and then use it on iPad. This is easy to do if you have a mac, it also can be done in PC but you need some technical know how.

You can google how to share internet via pc or mac to get it working.

There is no way to directly connect the usb data card to iPad and use internet

Firstly Thanks for posting such a nice review.
I have 3G data card of Reliance. It works very good in my Mac.
I also have Ipod touch 4G and IPad too.
I tried the same what you mentioned above how to share the connection using data card on Mac..and share the network.

I could do that…but only for few minutes…
after that either my mac network is not working and also ipod touch wifi is not working.

Would appreciate you..if you can help me out of this.
    Thanks

Go to settings & then to sharing on mac and click on internet sharing choose which connection you want to share and then share it using wifi and enable it.

You wifi symbol will change and now you can use it from other devices via wifi

About ipod touch if you are using hidden access point it will not work also make sure you use WPA2 -PSK for network authentication on WiFi and it should work.

Get all the latest updates too, there was a WiFi fix in one of them.

Also disable security and connect once and then turn on security and see if that help, just a few suggestion to try out.

If the internet connection disconnects often this could happen

  6. sam9s says:

I am standing in the market with a mobile with wifi, but no 3G or EDGE, and I want internet on my mobile. how am I suppose to solve this with your solution. In that case I guess getting this device or any other device/portable router that can convert a 3G signal to a wifi is what that would work …..

    • prasanth says:

You can buy a 3G wifi router which take a 3G sim and give you wifi internet

You can also connect a usb data card instead of sim to such router to get wifi internet.

it costs 2000 – 3500 depending on the brand

  7. Prashant says:

    hi Prasanth,
I am looking out for a device which will convert my current photon+ in to wifi hub. And which will run on rechargeble battery. not a regular power plug .
I found one device , but it requires continuous adapter power only.
Really! If such kind of device will help people. So that they can use internet in their other devices like ipad, tabs, mobile phones etc. without having computer/laptop. what say?

    • prasanth says:

There are router that work on battery but it only lasts for few hours.

Do a search for 3g routers with battery on http://www.eBay.in and there are quite few there.

I don’t know your usage pattern, if you want internet all day wired is the best option.

For the cheapest internet connection for all your devices, its best to go with wired broadband connection with a wifi router.

This is my setup now, for travel you can always share your connection via wifi from your computer.

  8. Harry says:

I was searching for pocket wifi and found your website useful. I live outside India but visit India frequently. I use iPhone but I can not switch it on in India because the internaitonal roaming charge for use in India is very high. Thought of getting pocket wifi, so that i can connect the same to my iPhone whenever I am in India. Which connection/company do you suggest? best, Harry

    • prasanth says:

Since you only need connection when you come to india. Tata photon is a good option but they only have post paid option.

There is no easy way. You will have to get a 3G data card and a 3G wifi router.

BSNL 3G and Tataphon data cards offer good value buys and will work all over India.

Tataphon offers 2500 Rs for 6 GB for six months.

3G is still costly in India and there are no unlimited plans.

      tataphoton wifi 5999 + 900 for 6 GB X 12 months post paid = 16799 Rs (6 GB per month)
      3G data card 3000 + 2500 for 6 gb for 6 months X 2 times per year = 8000 Rs (1 GB per month)

It depends on how many times you come to India and how much bandwidth you need.

Sorry don’t know specific 3G router models.

  9. chris says:

i have an ipad but i wanted to purchase a pocket wifi , but i am not sure which one would work.. since i will be using the metro alot in India.

    • prasanth says:

There is only 1 pocket wifi option that is from tata photon. If you want to roll your own you can do it by getting a 3rd party 3g router and a 3g sim. Since all of them connect through wifi, they all should work on iPad without any problem.

iPad has Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n) so all the wifi standards are covered. So any wifi device should work with iPad.

    • chris says:

could you give me some names for 3rd part routers..?

    • prasanth says:

Get a 3G router and it should work with your photon +.

router gives you wifi and you can be online.

When buying router make sure it works with your photon, 3G routers cost anywhere between 3000-5000 Rs. Mostly chinese companies, if you can’t find any in shops look at ebay.in

  12. Ankush Sharma says:

    hi,

I would like to connect my tata photon + with Lan port of my wifi router so i can share the internet to my other devices with wifi.

I have already routed the photon to Ethernet with Connectify software , but Wi-fi router (beetel 450tc1) not sharing the internet connection.

Do i need to change some settings in router too so that it can share the Lan connections with wifi?

    Regards,
    Ankush Sharma

    • prasanth says:

I didn’t even know you could root photon to work with ethernet port.

It has a usb port to connect, how does it work with ethernet.

First connect the ethernet to a computer to check if the rooting is working.

The easier way is to get a 3G router that supports tata photon.

You could also connect to a computer and share the wifi on the computer to give wifi access to other devices. You will have to keep the computer on when you need wifi.
