My favorites from CES 2012
These are the things that stood out for me at this years CES.
Thermador Freedom Induction Cooktop this is the future of cooking for me. It costs around 4 lakhs. But it will come down in price and will be adapted by all. Future of induction cooking.
Fitbit Aria Wi-Fi Smart Scale its simple and uploads all your body data to the fitbit site where its beautifully visualized. Its cheap also.
Lenovo IdeaCenter A720 its the all one that look like imac with a flexible body. Love the fact that you can pull down and use it like a big tablet. It has a touch screen and its cheaper than imac. Hope imac goes this way too.
Samsung inTouch camera you can attach this camera to your tv and get internet and video chatting on tv. This is will good device to buy until you get wifi enabled tv which will be cheaper only 2 to 3 years from now. Until then hook this up to bring your old tv to internet.
Sharp Tv not the big ass tv. In the middle of the video they bring out battery powered tv that you can carry around. Love the idea, hope it comes to market and has 10 hours battery life. There is Toshiba power tv now in the market but it looks as big as regular tv not carry-able.
Samsung and LG OLED TV these cost a bomb now but in future, they will be as cheap as the LCD’s now. So this is the future of tv and loving it.
Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga unbelievable industrial design. I don’t think this will take off but love the design and the idea.
There were some phone announcements like the Nokia Lumia 900 and HTC Titan 2 etc. Also more demos of Windows 8, Nintendo Wii U, Sony Playstation Viva etc. These have been see else where before.
It was tablets galore i don’t think android tablets will take off. It will take release of Windows 8 tablets to compete with iPad.
Google tv will happen but no one will use it at least in India. Unless they some how get on to DTH set top boxes.

India mourns Steve Jobs

All the major English newspapers lead with this story. And it was featured on the front page. For a company that has no official store this is remarkable.

Save these newspapers you will not be seeing anything similar for any CEO in a long time to come.

Apple still is a luxury brand only the wealthy in India can afford, but every middle class family dreams of day when they can afford a apple device like the iPhone or the iPad etc.

Even though the mp3 players are quite popular in India, there are very few takers for the pricey computers and laptops.
This post and the story in newspapers only goes to show how big of an impact Steve Jobs has had all over the world.
For me personally he was a design and marketing genius i admired very much. I have followed all the live apple events, through live blogs all through the night since 2003.
And again saw the full press event video in the morning, hoping i would one day afford one of these devices.
Now i am an apple fan boy with iPad, Macbook air, iPod Touch, iPod Nano and iMac that i am still currently using. Didn’t buy the iPhone 4 because of the jail breaking issues.
Twice every year it was like christmas for me when apple announced their press event. Even though i was not going to buy all the products. I loved waiting for that date and staying up late to watch Steve deliver his pitch perfect presentations and his magical products.
For me personally my Santa Claus has died so there won’t be any Christmas any more.
RIP Steve we & I personally miss u and your presentations and products. It will not be same with your…

Listening to music in India
What are the options for listening to music in India at the moment. Here are the sites, apps i found for Indian music.
First source has to be YouTube, just search for any song from any language and you can find it on YouTube.
They also have YouTube app for all the mobile devices. Even if they don’t have apps, their mobile site works well on all the devices.
So YouTube is the first place to look for any song, especially if you are looking for a music video.

This should be your ultimate destination for bollywood music. They have the most cleanest website and app for bollywood music.
They have apps for android and iPhone.
You can save and share your playlists. You can also tweet or like the songs so that your twitter and Facebook friends can find new songs.
Their app is the best around. Its simple and quite easy to use. they even have the low bandwidth options. It works flawlessly with 3G or WiFi.
The only bad thing about Saavn is that they don’t have other languages at the moment.
Hopefully they will add them in the near future.
Click here for Saavn Android app & iOS app

This service has music from many more languages than Saavn. They have all the songs from Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and many more languages.
Their website is filled with ads but is useable. They could cut down 1 or 2 ads which could improve the service quite a bit.
Their app is quite buggy at the moment, hopefully they will improve it in future. If you want a app with music from most of the Indian languages then you only have Raaga service there are no other options.
Site is filled with ads and app is quite buggy, if they can do anything to improve both these things their service could be a must have for many.
Vimeo – Raaga app video review
Click here for Raaga Android app & iOS app

This is a website only service, again filled with ad’s why can’t these sites just stick to 1 ad and charge a premium for it.
They too have music from most Indian languages and its easy to use.
They don’t have a mobile site or any mobile apps.
Most of these sites rely on flash so even if they want to they can’t implement mobile friendly sites. Which is quite sad situation, hoping they will bring apps soon for all the major mobile os and compete with Raaga.
Which will be only good for consumers.
This is a search function but it presents the music results in a very clean format from where you can also listen to music in a pop up.
If you just want to listen to one song and don’t want to worry about sharing and playlists. This should be your first option.
There is no mobile feature which would have made discovering music on mobiles quite easy.
Nice to see so many music service which are legitimate. If only some one could bring iTunes like purchasing for Indian music at Indian prices. No one is going to pay 45 Rs per song but may be 10 Rs like Manoramic tried. Sadly that site is shutdown, hopefully apple or some other media company provides such service soon. Until then enjoy free streaming music from these services.

BSNL high speed 16 Mbps broadband internet review
Bsnl has been offering high speed broadband internet for a few years now. I ordered my connection few weeks back.
Here is what you need to know before you get the connection.
There are 2 types of High speed connections one is 8 Mbps & 16 Mbps.
8 Mbps you get 60 GB limit – 2799 Rs
16 Mbps you get 125 GB – 4999 Rs
You can find the charges and other details from BSNL broadband site here
With this connection you have to keep one thing in mind. You have to be within 1 Km range of your nearest BSNL exchange office to get this connection.
You need a land line connection before they can provide you this service.
You will also have to buy a new type of model called VDSL modem (Its not available for sale, so buy or rent the modem from BSNL)
It costs around 3000 Rs, its better to go for a rental one from BSNL. You will only have to pay 100 Rs per month for rental modem. That way you can get free replacement if your modem has any issues.
The procedure of using the connection is similar to getting the bsnl broadband connection. The technician from BSNL will do all the necessary stuff.
So how fast is the high speed BSNL connection.
It depends on what you are using. If you are browsing regular websites its almost instantaneous. You can watch youtube vidoes without waiting for them to load.
Don’t expect to download 1 GB per hour it more like 400 – 600 MB per hour.
The fastest speed i got on my 16 Mbps is around 9 Mbps. It took me 3 hours to download the recent 4 GB lion update.
Most of the services limit their speed so don’t expect same speed everywhere. But compare to anything thats available out there. This is the fastest and the cheapest way to connect to the internet.
Since the modem is a wifi router also, you can connect all your other devices to it. If 2-3 people use internet in the same house its becomes quite economical too.
If you don’t use that much of internet and videos you can get the 8 Mbps connection. i recommend you go for 16 Mbps if are a heavy user like me. You will get 125 GB bandwidth limit which is quite good, nearly 4.5 Gb per day.
You can use BSNL self care site to keep track of your bandwidth usage. Once you create an account it takes a day to get updated from then on you can check the site to see your bandwidth usage. Check the unbilled usage details know your current bandwidth.
Visit this link to see my BSNL speed test results
Tip : By changing the dns on your router to Google dns you can increase the speed.

Convert Pages app in Lion into a distraction free writing tool

Since Pages doesn’t allow document background to be changed there is little hack. Just make a text box with black background and white text. Remove the margins, and expand the text box to fill the screen.
Now you go to full screen you have a distraction free writing environment.
If you don’t want to go completely black you can change it to what ever color you want.
By using black you can save quite a bit of battery power. By using black on white it looks good even in the lowest brightness which in turn preserves the battery.
You can even set this as template and use it anytime you want.
When apple starts the iCloud service you can even have your important file synced by using Pages. So there is a big benefit in using pages for all your writing needs.
No with this hack it becomes distraction free.

How to Clean install Lion os
In order to clean install Lion there are few steps you need to take. If you already installed Lion and want to go back and install Lion as a clean install that too can be done.
Follow these steps
Make a bootable dvd or usb drive.
You can only do this after downloading the Lion operating system from app store and before installing it. Once you install Apple deletes the file.
So do this after downloading and before installing.
Making a bootable Lion disk will come in handy in future when you want to reinstall Lion without downloading it again.
The only way to clean install Lion is by using snow leopard.
So find the free snow leopard dvd or usb recovery disk you received and install snow leopard again. This time when at the installation screen make sure you erase the hard disk by using disk utility. Which can be found in the menu bar during installation.
Once you install do a software update. You should get mac os updates which will be around 1 GB (the size of the update will depend on which version of snow leopard you have). Once you download and install that pop in your newly created Lion usb or dvd and install Lion on this clean version of snow leopard.
If you are doing this only on one machine you don’t even need to make the bootable disk. Just clean install snow leopard and do the updates and download and install Lion from app store.
Why would you want to make a clean install ? Thats a good question
I have had my mac for the last three years and only upgraded to the new os so far. I install every new program that comes around so. So there is lot of junk on the machine now, so i wanted a clean start

Why so many pre announcements by Apple
Apple’s WWDC will start on June 6th. Its just a few days away. Then why is Apple making so many announcements and releases.
They never talk about the topics to be discussed during the keynote in advance. So why did they announce it early, from all the rumors sites its seem like. They just wanted to keep expectation in check. And the stock from falling when there will be no iPhone announcement.
Are they double bluffing and will they surprise everyone by announcing iPhone 5. I don’t think so, i don’t think they will even mention the future iPhone’s at this event because they don’t want to cannibalize their current iPhone 4 sales.
Then about the iWork why did they release it, just a few days ahead of the WWDC. I just downloaded the universal app for Numbers and its a 100 MB download, if you have all the other iWork apps it around 300 MB download.
Even Garageband & iMovie updated on June 1st. That’s nearly 400 Mb download in total. Which they wanted people to get before WWDC. So you can imagine that they have some big downloads coming at WWDC, IOS 5 will it be available on 6th?. Some rumors are even saying that Lion update for macos will be available as a download after the keynote.
No matter what this will be an interesting WWDC to watch.

Last unlimited plan falls, welcome to fair use
Few days back while checking the Aircel tariff plans i noticed that their 97 Rs -30 days plan has changed.
Now its 3 Gb fair use limit and you get charged 10 p/Kb or 100 Rs per Mb after that. This was a pure unlimited plan before, now like all the other carriers they too have changed their unlimited plan. Its not like they are offering 3G unlimited plans for customers to switch to.
I am getting myself accustomed to start paying for Bandwidth and stop thinking about ever getting a truly unlimited plan in India. I don’t think any carrier in India will ever offer unlimited from now on. All will be fair use unlimited plans which are bandwidth plans just marketed as unlimited plans.
I would have been fine if the fair use was a bit better implemented. If 10 Gb was offered as fair use that would give you around 350 Mb per day which would be more than enough even for heavy users. But with 3 Gb limit you get around 100 Mb per day which might seem like lot. but that is just three 5 minute videos on YouTube at normal quality or 2 game downloads etc.
Sad to see the last unlimited plan fall, hoping the carriers will come to their senses and offer higher bandwidth plans at cheaper rates.
When world over speeds are increasing and getting faster we still struggling to implement 3G and 2 Mbps broadband. Hoping that the greed of our carriers will not leave us too far behind.
Now i have no reason to stay with Aircel, soon i will be using MNP to switch carriers. Bsnl or Vodafone seem like the most likely one…
