Manoramic Finally a legal mp3 music store in india
Update
This site is shutting down, sad to see such a service going down. It will close on may 15th, I wonder how anyone in India will ever find a legitimate music service.
The coupon will add 5 FREE download credits over and above the download credits that come with our three download packages. Eg. if the user provides the coupon code when purchasing the Rs.239 package for 40 download credits, their account will be credited with 45 download credits.
This is what i was asking for the past few years. A service cheap enough that i can afford to pay.
This new service is offering mp3 downloads at 6 Rs per song, no DRM etc 128 bit mp3′s.
This is the cheapest legal way to download music in India that i know of. Unlike itunes your can stream all the songs for free online. If you want to download its 6 Rs per song for their Premium Package. Most of the songs are available for download with some exceptions.
In Premium Package you get 40 downloads for 250 Rs, no time limit. The downloads are yours for life, will play on any device, mp3 players, mobiles etc No DRM pure mp3′s. They have other plans too see here for more.
Now the song catalog they have close to 330000 songs in 45 languages and 200 genres. I have found songs here which don’t appear on musicindiaonline.com or raaga.com
The best part is you can stream all the music for free. Only pay when you want to download. For 6 Rs your get 128 bit mp3 with album art and all the details.
The only downside i can find from the site is even if you pay they are showing advertisements. Which could have been avoided. I guess they have to pay for the streaming service.
Now you have no excuse not to buy music in India. Support such service now and if more people start using the service the rates could go down further.
I am a Premium Package user already.

No 3G for me please
After seeing all the 3G data plans i have decided to stay on 2G for my mobile for the moment. Even though i have a 3G capable mobile (HTC HD7). I will only upgrade to 3G once these providers give me reasonable data plans.
What is the point of having 21 Mbps speeds, if you can finish it in 15 minutes. I rather use a 20 Kbps speed for unlimited time with 2G Sim. And it only costs me 97 Rs on Aircel.
I was hoping BSNL or Aircel would offer unlimited plan but even they have decided not to.
Now BSNL has even withdrawn its unlimited plan for 3G data cards or Usb modems. So i will even go to 2G data cards once my unlimited 3G plans finishes which is two months away.
These companies will offer unlimited plans sooner than expected because no one is going to get these costly plans they are offering now. Its only a matter of time and who buckles to the pressure first. Once one provider does it all of them will start offering it. Look at what happened with 2G data cards.
If you haven’t gone to 3G yet wait don’t upgrade because its way too costly to use 3G now. Even to get 1G you have to pay around 500 Rs with the cheapest plan from any provider. That would only last about 1 hour of HD you tube watching.
So if any 3G providers are listening out there, let people use your service and only then will you make money. By keeping these plans so high you are scaring people away. It cost 15000 Rs for 1 GB with pays as you go plan. Good luck finding people who will use them.
Even if you can’t give me unlimited at least give me 100 GB at 1 Mbps and i am willing to pay 2500 Rs per month. Until then i will keep using 2G.
PS : Many people are switching to 3G, so 2G is quite fast now.

Indian guy controls Tata sky using Kinect
I am surprised we don’t see more stuff like this on the net from India. India is know for it IT services most of the worlds big companies have offices here. Many talented people are working in them. So really surprised that we don’t see more of these videos.
Hoping from now on it will change.
How cool would it be if Tata sky made this into a real product. I am guessing most people who have tatasky’s will have an xbox too at least 50% would have both. They could make this official by refining the gestures a bit.
They are launching apps for recording programs on mobiles. If they offer this they will have something even more unique.

No cheaper way to speed up internet connection
Many people ask me how to increase speed. I am using my mobile as modem on a 2G sim. That’s a dial up connection which you can’t make much faster.
Changing the dns on the system or your mobile could help a little but not much. If you want good speed you have to get a faster connection like the 3G data cards or wired broadband connection which are becoming cheap now.
Dial up – 20 kbps – 100 mb takes 2 hours
(2G sim, Mobile Internet etc)
100 Rs – 250 Rs per months
Broadband – 40-50 kbps – 100 mb takes 1 hour
(Wired Broadband connection, 2G datacards)
250 Rs – 750 Rs
3G data cards – 150 kbps – 100 mb takes 1/2 hour
(New 3G sim and 3G data cards)
750 Rs – 1500 Rs
When not busy you can get up to 1-3 mbps in some areas.
There are other tricks like using opera browser and using their turbo mode etc. But most people want to increase speed in seeing videos and downloads.
Which can’t be done cheaply, So get one of the cheap wired connections or pay little premium and get 3G data cards.
That is the only sure way to get good speeds.

Do this Increase speed on Bsnl 3G data cards
These are not hacks they are more like tips.
By default the BSNL software choose the preferred network automatically. What does this mean, when ever there is a problem with 3G network it will automatically go to 2G network.
It might happen just for a while some time, but could take longer too. It happens automatically you will not even notice it. But the speed difference is quite big.
So diable automatic and choose 3G only which can be done by going to the settings when its disconnected.
Don’t forget to put it back to automatic when your roaming or when you are in no 3G areas.
Also changing the DNS which also can only be done when disconnected helps too.
Use the google DNS which is faster, the settings are.
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
Using these trick you could increase your speeds quite a bit.
One more thing to keep in mind is as more and more user start learning about the 3G network and start using it will eventually get slower.
Hopefully BSNL will keep adding more bandwidth.
I sometimes get 3 mbps when i am downloading stuff. Most of the times its around 300 kbps. Which is faster than their broadband.

New Macbook Air costs 60000 Rs in india
I too was interested in getting the new macbook air’s that Steve jobs showed in yesterdays “Back to mac” event. If it was priced at the same price its available in USA 999$ (44276 Rs), i would have considrered it. But it will cost 60000 Rs in India. You might ask how did i get to that price. Its quite simple actually, the 13inch white macbook which are priced for 999$ in US cost 60000 Rs in India. So the cheapest 11inch macbook air will cost 60000 Rs and 13 inch will cost you as much as 75000 Rs.
If price is not an issues for you, get the macbook 13inch which gives you longer battery life and more screen real estate. If it was priced as much as the ipad apple would have the whole netbook market. But they went for a higher price which will again see not many people getting the air.I have seen the old air in person and was so tempted to buy it, when i was buying my macbook. But 30000 Rs price difference between macbook and air kept me from buying the air. If you get a chance just go and check out the macbook in person its the pinnacle of industrial design and product design.

Google is testing a cool idea where users can create sms channels in which they can send daily sms’s. This is a cool features for friends and small business. You login with your google user id and make your own sms channel. Once you make a channel you can make it invitation only or public. When you send a sms to that channel, it will be sent to all the people in that channel. You can also send sms’s online without any charges. You can also make a friends channel and make it invitation only and send it to your friends. Once they join if you send a sms it will be automatically sent to all your friends, who joined that group.Small business could use this feature to send special offer etc.Using this channel you can also join other sms channels that belong to your area or your interest like jokes, news, stock tips, quotes etc. And receive sms’s from them free of cost. Even cricket scores are available.Go here to try it out http://labs.google.co.in/smschannelsHere is a cool trick i made a channel with my number and when ever i want to send small amount of text or url etc to my phone, i just copy and paste to that channel. I am canceling my BSNL broadband connection
I am going to cancel my bsnl broadband connection, why you ask?I pay 1650 Rs per month and it gives me only 512 kbps. And half of the time its dead and i have to call the BSNL office and they never respond. Its a post paid connection and i have to pay even when i am out of town and not using it.BSNL 3G data card is much better. I can take it with me where ever i go. Even to other states at no extra cost. Since its a prepaid connection, if i know i will not be using internet for long, i can even take a cheaper packages.BSNL could give me a 8 mbps connection at 1650 Rs and i might think about keeping broadband. But even then i think BSNL 3G data card it more practical and better. At 3 mbps you can stop worrying about internet speed and start using it.After more than 8 years or so i finally will cancel my broadband connection which i never thought would happen.

Bsnl 3G data card the best there is, work on mac
I have been using bsnl 3G data card on my 13 inch macbook for the past two months. And i am pretty happy with it, here are the reasons why.

1. Its Truly Unlimited and not 15 Gb unlimited like Tataphoton and Reliance netconnet highspeed.
2. Its Unlimited even when roaming
3. It works pretty well on a Mac
4. It has 3G network in most parts of India already
5. You can recharge Bsnl 3G data card online using http://portal.bsnl.in
6. No more worry about wires, modems routers. Just plug it in and get internet anywhere.
7. Its cheapest 3G unlimited out there.Just two months back you had to pay 3000 Rs for 1 month for unlimited, now they have dropped the price to 1499 Rs. Which is the lowest i think any 3G unlimited package will ever get. Others might offer cheaper unlimited packaged but they will be crippled unlimited not truly unlimited.

Hardware
It looks like a big usb pen drive with a small removable cover on the back which hides the bsnl #3G sim. There is a slot for a memory card which when inserterd can be used as a pen drive with this bsnl data card. All the other data cards also provide this feature, its a helpful feature which i have not yet used. There is one led light on the device which blinks green when the device is connected to the internet. When its switched off it glows red.The device costs 2500 Rs and comes with a 500 Mb free usage. Unlimited data plan costs 1499 Rs.
Installation
On windows once you plug it in, it shows as a bsnl drive just click on it and the installation begins. Once the installation is done. It will show you the dialer and you select internet and click the connect button that’s it. You are online with 3G speeds.

On mac once you plug it in it shows up as a cd drive. Just copy the mac folder on to your desktop and open the installation file in it. Which installs and puts a blue 3G icon app in the application folder. Just click it and the dialer will load. Wait a few second while the data card detects the sim and show you the network.

On mac you have to manually type some settings in, once you do you are online.Click on the “default configuration” and select edit configuration.Click the “+” icon and make a new connection give it a name, any name. Now put the settings shown in the picture.

Telephone Number : *99***#Username & Password : Leave blankAPN : bsnlnetThe dns settings are not necessary, i use them because they make it a little bit faster. Those are Google DNS settings.Save these settings. Now select the setting you just created and click connect. You should be online. One more thing you should notice this is for both mac & pc’s in settings on the dialer. Select “3G only” otherwise it will keep going to 2G if coverage in your area is weak.

If its on 3G it should show this.

Verdict
If its in 3G you can get speeds up t0 3mbps. Not on all the site or downloads, but most of them. Browsing you will never have to wait for a page load. And youtube standard quality videos can be seen without buffering. You can download5 mb in 1 minute30 mb in 5 minutes100 mb in 15 minutesLast month i used around 60 Gb mostly watching youtube videos and download podcasts. This month its up to 50 Gb and i have 10 more days to go.With such cheap data plans and these speeds i don’t know why any one would look else where. If bsnl can keep up with the demand and speed as more and more users start using this service. Its game over for Tataphoton and Reliance netconnet highspeed. We were waiting for the future and its here. What are you waiting for get Bsnl 3G data card….
Update ….Bsnl has reduced the unlimited 3G plans further to 700 Rs per month. So let the pricing war begin…

Aircel is the one for your data needs
I am always on the look out for cheap internet usuage. So i wanted a sim that will give me unlimited internet even while roaming and has to be a prepaid sim. There are not many option out there. There are some unlimited options, but the have a fair use policy, which means its not unlimited. So after my exhausting search here is the winner.Aircel has the best unlimited gprs plan out there, its 97 Rs per month. This is truly unlimited, no fair use policy bull shit here. I have used nearly 5 Gb for this month alone and its still working. I have been using this service for the past 1 year. I always use more than 5 Gb per month. The best part is it even works unlimited while roaming. This is the best option for a data sim especially if you are in the south of India.I wouldn’t recommend it as your phone sim, because they have very little coverage. But for you data and internet need this is it. It even works as a usb data card sim, if you use it with bsnl 3g usb modem. Its got good speed too, i got 80 kbps with the data card. Now others are offering unlimited plans, but aircel been doing that for the past one year.By they way if you want to know what i use the 5 Gb per month for. Its mostly for podcasts, i use listen app on my HTC hero. If you are using android phones with auto sync turned on, it will suck up quite a bit of data.
