These are the things that stood out for me at this years CES.

Thermador Freedom Induction Cooktop this is the future of cooking for me. It costs around 4 lakhs. But it will come down in price and will be adapted by all. Future of induction cooking.

Fitbit Aria Wi-Fi Smart Scale its simple and uploads all your body data to the fitbit site where its beautifully visualized. Its cheap also.

Lenovo IdeaCenter A720 its the all one that look like imac with a flexible body. Love the fact that you can pull down and use it like a big tablet. It has a touch screen and its cheaper than imac. Hope imac goes this way too.

Samsung inTouch camera you can attach this camera to your tv and get internet and video chatting on tv. This is will good device to buy until you get wifi enabled tv which will be cheaper only 2 to 3 years from now. Until then hook this up to bring your old tv to internet.

Sharp Tv not the big ass tv. In the middle of the video they bring out battery powered tv that you can carry around. Love the idea, hope it comes to market and has 10 hours battery life. There is Toshiba power tv now in the market but it looks as big as regular tv not carry-able.

Samsung and LG OLED TV these cost a bomb now but in future, they will be as cheap as the LCD’s now. So this is the future of tv and loving it.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga unbelievable industrial design. I don’t think this will take off but love the design and the idea.

There were some phone announcements like the Nokia Lumia 900 and HTC Titan 2 etc. Also more demos of Windows 8, Nintendo Wii U, Sony Playstation Viva etc. These have been see else where before.

It was tablets galore i don’t think android tablets will take off. It will take release of Windows 8 tablets to compete with iPad.

Google tv will happen but no one will use it at least in India. Unless they some how get on to DTH set top boxes.

Just received the Nokia X7 few days back from Nokia. At first i was skeptical about this device, but as the days passed by i kind of liked this phone. I wish i could keep the phone as my main phone. It has amazing battery life. Can last almost two days with wifi turned on.

Hardware

The Nokia build quality was amazing as usual. It felt solid in hand and the curves make it comfortable to hold it your hand for extended use.

It comes with capacitive AMOLED screen which is just amazing. Video and photos look spectacular on this phone. It also has a 8 mega pixel dual flash camera. Which can also record high def video.

Memory card slot and dedicated camera button make it a compelling device for anyone.

Usage

This phone runs Symbian anna which is the latest version of Symbian. This goes a long way to make the device easy to use with touch unlike other previous versions. All the app that come standard with the device work rather well with touch interface.

The phone part of the device works quite well. Voice is clear and speaker phone is also quite loud. It comes with caller id pre installed which is really helpful.

If you long press the call button on the device voice control comes up which will allow you to call your contacts, open applications etc. It needs a data connection to work but as they inform when you use this feature for the first time it uses very little data.

Messaging and twitter are integrated into the phone with apps designed for the device. The email apps has automatic setup for all providers, including indian ones like rediffmail etc. Email app is similar to the messaging app and its quite simple to use.

You get free Ovi sync to sync your contacts, calendar, notes etc to the cloud for free.

Web browser has been improved a lot on this one. If you don’t like it, you can always install opera and use that as your main browser.

The app store is filled with all the apps you find in other apps stores. Games like Angry birds, Fruit ninja etc are available for this device and work amazingly well on it.

Videos and photos look crisp on this device. With loud speakers you can really enjoy your videos. By using the Ovi music store you can buy bollywood music, the only legitimate way to buy digital music in India at the moment.

Camera is also quite good with dual flash its even easier to take good pictures in bad light conditions. You can also record High def videos on this device with good quality.

By using a hdmi cable you can watch the videos on your HD TV. There is a free app to make this process easier, which will guide you step by step.

The home button on the device also acts as a task switcher and its implemented quite well. To quit apps and go to the main screen you can use this home button. Which simplifies using the device quite a bit.

You will love using the device with its gorgeous screen and nice widgets and apps.

Verdict

This is a very good Nokia phone, it has the trade mark Nokia build quality and stylings. And the interface is also much improved from previous versions.

I don’t mind using this as my regular phone, the battery life on this is just amazing.

Nokia X7 is priced around Rs. 20754

BH-905i are the new top end bluetooth stereo Noise canceling headphones from Nokia. The build quality on the product is really good. It feels like you have bought a good product. Everything about the product is top end.

Even the case in which it comes is really cool. Looks like a CD case. You can carry all the wire and the charger in that case which is a nice thing.

Now about the head phones, it has good leather that surrounds the head band and the ear muffs. So it feels very comfortable when wearing. It flex and flips at two places on each side of the headphones, so any one can wear it comfortably.

Switching the headphone is simple, just hold the power button until the light comes one. To make it discoverable and pair with other devices just keep holding and it will start blinking blue. Now you can pair it with any device.

Pairing it to ipod touch, or PC is as simple as just selecting the device no numbers to enter etc. Ones its paired it works flawlessly. You can use the buttons on the head phones to play, skip and replay the music.

Now the noise canceling part, it has a buttons which you can toggle to turn on and off the noise cancelling feature. I like this because you don’t have to keep it on all time. You can use this feature only when you want to.

Even without the noise cancelling these headphone pretty much block all the noise. With noise cancelling turned on its pretty amazing to listen to just music.

These head phone worked up to 10 feet pretty well, but past that there was some lag.

You can also use this device wired to any gadget, even without a charge. You get all the necessary cables and pins with the device.

Now comes the most important part the battery. It last 25 hours on music, yes that’s right 25 hours. That a lot of time, more importantly you are not worried about the battery at that point. It also only takes 2 hours recharge which again is amazing.

I bought the Jabra halo which gives pathetic 6 hours. So i never use it. Yesterday i used the Nokia BH-905i for 8 hours continuously while i was travelling from Chennai.

It never had any problems all the way. I couldn’t say that for the jabra halo.

If you are in the market for a high end noise canceling bluetooth stereo headphones Nokia BH-905i are the ones to get.

If they were a little cheaper i would have bought my own. At 17500 Rs it a costly product but with all these feature on offer, its a must buy if you have that kind of money.

You will not regret it. I have added this to my wish list already. If only i would have known about this device before i bought the Jabra Halo.

This demo unit was give by wow world, i have to return it in few days. I really want this one, i should start saving for it.

I too was interested in getting the new macbook air’s that Steve jobs showed in yesterdays “Back to mac” event. If it was priced at the same price its available in USA 999$ (44276 Rs), i would have considrered it. But it will cost 60000 Rs in India. You might ask how did i get to that price. Its quite simple actually, the 13inch white macbook which are priced for 999$ in US cost 60000 Rs in India. So the cheapest 11inch macbook air will cost 60000 Rs and 13 inch will cost you as much as 75000 Rs.If price is not an issues for you, get the macbook 13inch which gives you longer battery life and more screen real estate. If it was priced as much as the ipad apple would have the whole netbook market. But they went for a higher price which will again see not many people getting the air.I have seen the old air in person and was so tempted to buy it, when i was buying my macbook. But 30000 Rs price difference between macbook and air kept me from buying the air. If you get a chance just go and check out the macbook in person its the pinnacle of industrial design and product design.

I have been using bsnl 3G data card on my 13 inch macbook for the past two months. And i am pretty happy with it, here are the reasons why.

1. Its Truly Unlimited and not 15 Gb unlimited like Tataphoton and Reliance netconnet highspeed.

2. Its Unlimited even when roaming

3. It works pretty well on a Mac

4. It has 3G network in most parts of India already

5. You can recharge Bsnl 3G data card online using http://portal.bsnl.in

6. No more worry about wires, modems routers. Just plug it in and get internet anywhere.

7. Its cheapest 3G unlimited out there.Just two months back you had to pay 3000 Rs for 1 month for unlimited, now they have dropped the price to 1499 Rs. Which is the lowest i think any 3G unlimited package will ever get. Others might offer cheaper unlimited packaged but they will be crippled unlimited not truly unlimited.

Hardware

It looks like a big usb pen drive with a small removable cover on the back which hides the bsnl #3G sim. There is a slot for a memory card which when inserterd can be used as a pen drive with this bsnl data card. All the other data cards also provide this feature, its a helpful feature which i have not yet used. There is one led light on the device which blinks green when the device is connected to the internet. When its switched off it glows red.The device costs 2500 Rs and comes with a 500 Mb free usage. Unlimited data plan costs 1499 Rs.

Installation

On windows once you plug it in, it shows as a bsnl drive just click on it and the installation begins. Once the installation is done. It will show you the dialer and you select internet and click the connect button that’s it. You are online with 3G speeds.

On mac once you plug it in it shows up as a cd drive. Just copy the mac folder on to your desktop and open the installation file in it. Which installs and puts a blue 3G icon app in the application folder. Just click it and the dialer will load. Wait a few second while the data card detects the sim and show you the network.

On mac you have to manually type some settings in, once you do you are online.Click on the “default configuration” and select edit configuration.Click the “+” icon and make a new connection give it a name, any name. Now put the settings shown in the picture.

Telephone Number : *99***#Username & Password : Leave blankAPN : bsnlnetThe dns settings are not necessary, i use them because they make it a little bit faster. Those are Google DNS settings.Save these settings. Now select the setting you just created and click connect. You should be online. One more thing you should notice this is for both mac & pc’s in settings on the dialer. Select “3G only” otherwise it will keep going to 2G if coverage in your area is weak.

If its on 3G it should show this.

Verdict

If its in 3G you can get speeds up t0 3mbps. Not on all the site or downloads, but most of them. Browsing you will never have to wait for a page load. And youtube standard quality videos can be seen without buffering. You can download5 mb in 1 minute30 mb in 5 minutes100 mb in 15 minutesLast month i used around 60 Gb mostly watching youtube videos and download podcasts. This month its up to 50 Gb and i have 10 more days to go.With such cheap data plans and these speeds i don’t know why any one would look else where. If bsnl can keep up with the demand and speed as more and more users start using this service. Its game over for Tataphoton and Reliance netconnet highspeed. We were waiting for the future and its here. What are you waiting for get Bsnl 3G data card….

Update ….Bsnl has reduced the unlimited 3G plans further to 700 Rs per month. So let the pricing war begin…

Tata photon are offering a new device that they are calling tata photon pocket wifi. Which is a router with a sim that gives your broadband speeds. This device is priced at 4999 Rs.What is the main feature of this device. This device acts a wifi hotspot and allows you to connect 5 different devices to internet. Why i am asking you to not buy this device now. They data plans are shit compared to BSNL 3G plans. Tata photon are offering the same plans they offered for Tata Photon Plus. So if that data wasn’t enough for you, now you can share the same connection with five more devices.Even their hardware is crap, the main selling point of this device is portability, so you would guess a router could at least last as long as the laptop battery lasts.

Has an in-built battery for a 2.5 Hrs operation

So if you are in the market for something like this a wifi router that is portable with an internet connection that you can carry. I have two solutions for you.1. Get a portable router that powers via usb, they are available for 3000 Rs. Get a BSNL 3G usb modem and hock that into the router and you have the same thing that is cheaper and lasts as long as the laptop battery. Bsnl have good data plans and especially an unlimited plan.

2. If you have a 3G usb data card like BSNL 3G or any others. You can share that connection via computer to other devices. Here is how i do it.I connect the BSNL 3G usb data card to my mac and turn on internet sharing in settings menu -> sharing -> internet sharing. And now using the mac’s wifi i can connect any device that has wifi to internet. I know there are ways to do the same on windows too.So don’t buy the tata photon pocket wifi, wait till they come out with a good battery like (10 hours or more) and an unlimited plan like BSNL 3G.

There is a thing or two other companies could learn about how to update a mobile device.HTC did a wonderful job of updating the HTC hero. First you get a small update which allows you to download firmware over the air. Then few days later they sent the 2.1 android update.I thought it would be like any other updates, it will completely reset my device. So i backed up everything on my phone that i wanted to my sd card using astro file explorer.HTC update didn’t reset anything. All my apps, settings, contacts, calendar were there. But it was disappointing that not all the features are available. No speech to text – this was one of the features I wantedNo live wallpaperWhat do you get in the 2.1 updateFew new HTC widgets (And the ability to download new htc widgets)To download new widgets go to widgets and look at the first link, it will allow you to download more widgets. try the notes widget its really cool.Improved market place now you can search better and also see screen shots of apps, Before installing them. There is a new navigation app, not yet tried out.You can now see what programs are using your battery etc.Now there is bluetooth file send & receive support. If you want to receive any thing from other mobiles or computers now you can do it through bluetooth. But its useful only for small files like mp3 etc. If you want to get anything bigger on to the device its still better to do it via usb. It took me 22 minutes to get a 150 mb file through bluetooth. There are quite a few small one but they are just normal updates nothing to write home about. That’s pretty much it.Pretty sad that not all the features of 2.1 android are ported over to this update. But the way they are updating the firmware for these devices is something special.I think the speech to text has problems with recognizing indian accent and may be that’s why they have not added it.The only issue i am facing with this update is wifi is not working on mine. It doesn’t show my wifi access point. i have reset the phone. And tried all the suggestions in android forums. But still no luck…

Today I played with an iPad of a friend for a while and here are my impressions.First of all its quite small than I imagined. I was expecting something as big as or close to my 13 inch Macbook. But its small like a digital photo frame a bit bigger than that. Only a little bigger than that.Second thing is how heavy it is, I don’t think people will enjoy playing on it holding it in their hand for a long time. But you can easily use it on your lap or arm rest etc.As soon as I turned it on it showed connect to iTunes message. So had to connect it to iTunes and register before I could start using the iPad.The screen, I own an iPhone so that was not such a big deal. But such a big screen with capacitive touch is wonderful to use.Browsing on it looks wonderful, I surfed to quite a few sites on safari and they all look wonderful. And pinch and zoom makes it wonderful to read websites and use internet.I was using this on a wi-fi so pages were loading quite fast. It was a 3G iPad, but we didn’t have a sim so used wi-fi.Photos on this thing look wonderful, so do videos.Even though its hard to get any videos to fill the screen because of the screen size. You will have black bands on top and bottom of the video, but still video looks quite good.Music player on it is quite nice. The sound from the speakers was also quite loud, louder than the iPhone.Music and videos take a couple of touches more on the iPad than the iPhone. Which was quite strange, when you compare how good they are on iPhone. You have to select a video and then go to a page about the video info and then click play. On iPhone you just click a video and it plays.Games look really fun to play on iPad, its made for games especially board games.Over all its a fun experience using it, and the hardware is solid apple build. If you have seen a unibody Macbook it looks quite similar to that. Will I buy one at least not this version, I am excited about iPhone 4 though.I would recommend this to anyone who uses internet a lot and doesn’t type much.My friend got it from overseas, you can buy it in India anywhere from 35000 – 40000 Rs. Apple has not yet officially launched iPad in India. If they price it around 25000 Rs which is what it sells for in USA. I might think about it, but I know they will not sell it for less than 35000 Rs.

I am a gadget afficinado, so like everyone else i too was watching the apple ipad event at 12:00 am eagerly. Trying to get all the details about it etc. After reading few hundred blog posts about it. Here are my view about the device and if i will buy one or not?First the price, its really hard to justify its pricing in India. It will cost as much as normal laptops in India.iPad wifi only version will cost16 GB will be 32135 Rs,32 GB will be 38575 Rs,64 GB will be 45015 Rs.Apple add 40% extra on things they sell india. 499$*46Rs+40%iPad wifi & 3G version will cost16 GB will be 40507 Rs,32 GB will be 46947 Rs,64 GB will be 53387 Rs.Apple add 40% extra on things they sell india. This would have been fine if it had multi tasking. On my macbook i always multi task, like downloading something while reading a web site. All we do on our computers is multitask. So going back to older times is hard for me.Not all indian sites work on safari and these sites have no plans to change the situation soon. This was the main reason for me to switch from iphone to HTC hero. There are some sites that don’t load well on safari. i need other browsers, for example stock trading sites don’t load in safari. But they load in chrome and firefox. On a laptop i can switch to those browsers, but on iPad i have no such option. Apple will never allow other browsers on iPad. Even with banking sites this is an issue. You could say this is a computer for other members in your family. That’s a good point but not at this price. I could buy them a good laptop at this price. Even a good netbook would be cheaper than this.

The iPad is a half inch thick device, with multi-touch, forever connected to the internet, simplified, focussed, affordable, and most importantly, can be superbly productive.

This above point is the only reason i might think of buying one. But it will largely depend on the price i will have to pay for it. If i can pay 20000 Rs for the device and 1000 Rs per month for unlimited 3G. i might get it, but that will never happen. Current unlimited 3G prices on BSNL are 3000 Rs per month. So lets see how it will be priced and that is what will decide if i buy it or not.

I bought one in the early days of these device, it had a small 6 inch screen. I just bought it because it was something new and i thought i would use it. But once i bought it, i realized how useless and they were.

First of all mine resets itself once the power goes off. So i had to manullay set the date and time every time, which it was capable to display. They could have put a small battery in it, that could have helped remember these details even when power went out or they could have saved it to the system. Even then its a useless device, why would you want a device keep churning photos when no one is looking at it. Just not eco friendly and waste of power.

Photo frame would only make sense if they could be used for other things. Like a tablet, when i don’t use it and dock it or while charging. It could become a photo frame or weather or news reader. Ipad is a good example of my concept.

That is the only way i think some thing like a digital photo frame could be justified.

If some one can come up with an epaper that could show a photo without any power. And generate enough power from light everyday to show one photos everyday, then i would buy one. All the technologies are available at the moment, some one needs to put it all together.

If you still was to buy one, this digital photo frame is now available in black and white colours for Rs. 8,000 with a one-year panel warranty and two-year product warranty.
