My favorites from CES 2012

These are the things that stood out for me at this years CES.

Thermador Freedom Induction Cooktop this is the future of cooking for me. It costs around 4 lakhs. But it will come down in price and will be adapted by all. Future of induction cooking.

Fitbit Aria Wi-Fi Smart Scale its simple and uploads all your body data to the fitbit site where its beautifully visualized. Its cheap also.

Lenovo IdeaCenter A720 its the all one that look like imac with a flexible body. Love the fact that you can pull down and use it like a big tablet. It has a touch screen and its cheaper than imac. Hope imac goes this way too.

Samsung inTouch camera you can attach this camera to your tv and get internet and video chatting on tv. This is will good device to buy until you get wifi enabled tv which will be cheaper only 2 to 3 years from now. Until then hook this up to bring your old tv to internet.

Sharp Tv not the big ass tv. In the middle of the video they bring out battery powered tv that you can carry around. Love the idea, hope it comes to market and has 10 hours battery life. There is Toshiba power tv now in the market but it looks as big as regular tv not carry-able.

Samsung and LG OLED TV these cost a bomb now but in future, they will be as cheap as the LCD’s now. So this is the future of tv and loving it.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga unbelievable industrial design. I don’t think this will take off but love the design and the idea.

There were some phone announcements like the Nokia Lumia 900 and HTC Titan 2 etc. Also more demos of Windows 8, Nintendo Wii U, Sony Playstation Viva etc. These have been see else where before.

It was tablets galore i don’t think android tablets will take off. It will take release of Windows 8 tablets to compete with iPad.

Google tv will happen but no one will use it at least in India. Unless they some how get on to DTH set top boxes.

My 2012 predictions

Many said the world would end. But we are still here… Yay for human race.

How will the coming year be…

3G

It’s such a failure in India that even after 1 year no one i know has 3G, not because it’s not available. But many still think its very costly.

Even I have not yet taken 3G because it cost nearly 1000 Rs per month to get a decent bandwidth connection.

Hopefully the telecom carriers will come to their senses and reasonably price the service in 2012.

There is always the rumor of getting 4G from reliance (Mukesh ambani’s company). Hope it comes soon and give the 3G a run for it money.

Tablets

Akash tablet was launched last year, I still think if you have the money iPad is the tablet to buy.

That will be the same in the coming year too. There will be plenty of chinese and local tablet manufactures. People will buy them and be disappointed and never use them again.

Apple will not launch a smaller version, but it will launch iPad 3 with double battery capacity of the current model. Retina display is also a sure thing.

Transport

More new car models will be launched this year. Reva from Mahindra will be an interesting thing to watch out for this year. If they plan and price it well this car could take off this year. Also new improved nano will see some good sales.

petrol prices will stay the same or could go up, as more problems seems to come up in middle east everyday.

Stock Market

By the end of the year both nifty and sensex will reach their all time highs. Most of the damage has already been done. Its time to go up, but slowly…

Politics

Nothing special will happen no new bills will be passed, until the next elections don’t expect any big reforms.

Sooner or later Indians have to realize that local parties can’t be given power. Coalitions governments will never be successful, it will become true as the year goes on.

Sports

India is expected to pick up some gold medals at olympics this year. They will but not in major sports like Hockey or athletics etc.  China & America will dominate.

Cricket will see India dominate at home but suffer overseas. I wonder if winning is because of lack of competition from other countries. No other country has genuine match winners.

Mobiles

No new os releases this year, just few updates here and there.

Android will dominate, Apple will keep continue making profits. Kind of dull year mobile os wise. There will hardware excitement through out the year mostly from android.

And apple will release its 1 model. I don’t expect the price of iPhone 4S in india to come down, it will stay they same.

Gaming

It’s about time for new consoles, Nintendo has already shown its hand, now its Xbox and Sony’s turn. They will showcase their new devices this year but might not release them this year.

Portable gaming will never reach its heyday as iPod touch & iPad will give them a stiff competition.

Sony’s portable viva will be more successful than Nintendo’s 3Ds

It will be interesting to watch, I will do a year-end review of my predictions…

India mourns Steve Jobs

All the major English newspapers lead with this story. And it was featured on the front page. For a company that has no official store this is remarkable.

Save these newspapers you will not be seeing anything similar for any CEO in a long time to come.

Apple still is a luxury brand only the wealthy in India can afford, but every middle class family dreams of day when they can afford a apple device like the iPhone or the iPad etc.

Even though the mp3 players are quite popular in India, there are very few takers for the pricey computers and laptops.

This post and the story in newspapers only goes to show how big of an impact Steve Jobs has had all over the world.

For me personally he was a design and marketing genius i admired very much. I have followed all the live apple events, through live blogs all through the night since 2003.

And again saw the full press event video in the morning, hoping i would one day afford one of these devices.

Now i am an apple fan boy with iPad, Macbook air, iPod Touch, iPod Nano and iMac that i am still currently using. Didn’t buy the iPhone 4 because of the jail breaking issues.

Twice every year it was like christmas for me when apple announced their press event. Even though i was not going to buy all the products. I loved waiting for that date and staying up late to watch Steve deliver his pitch perfect presentations and his magical products.

For me personally my Santa Claus has died so there won’t be any Christmas any more.

RIP Steve we & I personally miss u and your presentations and products. It will not be same with your…

You seriously think Lokpal Bill will end corruption!

You seriously think Lokpal Bill will end corruption

If you think Lokpal Bill will put an end to corruption i really feel sorry for you. You are seriously underestimating the will and trickery of our corrupt Indians.

Before you think Lokpal Bill will help fight corruption know this. The problem is not that we don’t know where corruption is happening. The real problem is that, we can’t prosecute the people who have been caught taking bribes.

Bill like Lokpal could not have done anything to stop 2G scam. We know the scam happened, we know who did it. But let see how long it will take for them to prosecute those who have been arrested.

Let take a look at China, there corruption is dealt with very seriously. People are executed if found guilty, but can you say corruption doesn’t exist in China.

Similarly even if we bring the best laws and regulatory bodies. People will always find a way around it.

Don’t forget this is the same country. Where a man started 250 companies to hide his corruption. I am talking about Satyam.

So is there no hope, there is hope rather than put up another committee that can get corrupt. Why not take practical steps to make it hard for corruption to happen.

One suggestion i have heard is that banning 1000 Rs & 500 Rs notes will help it. That’s a very good idea, also turn all the future government schemes and tenders into a public auctions.

These are some of the things that I can think of, many smart people out there with even more brilliant ideas.

Lets implement them, why is money going out of India. What can we do to stop it, like give them incentives to keep them money here. If we have to reduce tax liability etc let do it.

Last thing we need is another committee that every other party or person will claim is corrupt when the are found guilty.

No 3G for me please

After seeing all the 3G data plans i have decided to stay on 2G for my mobile for the moment. Even though i have a 3G capable mobile (HTC HD7). I will only upgrade to 3G once these providers give me reasonable data plans.

What is the point of having 21 Mbps speeds, if you can finish it in 15 minutes. I rather use a 20 Kbps speed for unlimited time with 2G Sim. And it only costs me 97 Rs on Aircel.

I was hoping BSNL or Aircel would offer unlimited plan but even they have decided not to.

Now BSNL has even withdrawn its unlimited plan for 3G data cards or Usb modems. So i will even go to 2G data cards once my unlimited 3G plans finishes which is two months away.

These companies will offer unlimited plans sooner than expected because no one is going to get these costly plans they are offering now. Its only a matter of time and who buckles to the pressure first. Once one provider does it all of them will start offering it. Look at what happened with 2G data cards.

If you haven’t gone to 3G yet wait don’t upgrade because its way too costly to use 3G now. Even to get 1G you have to pay around 500 Rs with the cheapest plan from any provider. That would only last about 1 hour of HD you tube watching.

So if any 3G providers are listening out there, let people use your service and only then will you make money. By keeping these plans so high you are scaring people away. It cost 15000 Rs for 1 GB with pays as you go plan. Good luck finding people who will use them.

Even if you can’t give me unlimited at least give me 100 GB at 1 Mbps and i am willing to pay 2500 Rs per month. Until then i will keep using 2G.

PS : Many people are switching to 3G, so 2G is quite fast now.

This is how you do charity

Rafael Nadal silently came to my home district of Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh and inaugurated a tennis school. He will be coming from next year on wards for a few days every year and train students at the school. He will also be contributing 50 Lakh rupees every year to run the institute. How many celebrities can do something so big without any publicity. New respect from me for the world n01 tennis player. Leander and Mahesh can learn a thing or two.

Nadal, who lost in the Shanghai Open quarterfinals last weekend, flew into Bangalore yesterday and quietly travelled the 175km to Anantpur in a car, eschewing official security or publicity. He was accompanied by mother Anna Maria Nadal Parera and sister Maria Isabel. After inaugurating the school — the first outside Spain that the Rafael Nadal Foundation has opened — the champion interacted with the 50-odd students and played a game against district collector B. Janardhan Reddy.

World’s 1st 10000 crores house called Antilla

I am really happy that someone like Mukesh Ambani has built a house that costs 10000 crores. It is being opened on October 28th, when our politicians live in such luxuary why not the richest indian who has more than earned it.It will provide jobs to many, it will need 600 employes to run this house. Thats provides much need jobs to many. This will also be an inspiration to every indian entrepreneur. What is the point of wealth if you can enjoy it.Some figures about the house1. 27-stored building is 570 feet high6 floors of parking for 160 cars3 heli pads1 mini-theatre for 504 floors will be occupied for the Ambani’s which is 4 lakh square feet. They are just some stunning figures…Wouldn’t it be cool if Ambani’s invite 100 citizens from all over India randomly to the opening. Can i get one please..All i can say is great some one has built the ultimate House ever and its in India, we all should be proud. Don’t comment saying it waste of money when so much poverty exsits in India etc.We are the same people who watch 100 crore movies and just recently hosted Rs 30000 crore common wealth games in delhi etc. Think about those before you comment. This at least could inspire many to come out of poverty, what did those movie and games do other than make a few people rich.

Royal familes and Rolls Royce

This is one of the bizare stories i read in recent time. After reading this you will realise why kings and queens in India are extinct.

The Rolls-Royce owned by Maharani Sethu Parvati Bai of Travancore in 1933 had a small stool on the floor where a dwarf used to sit and massage the queen’s legs remaining invisible to people around.

If they could have used that money to help their people, they would have still been here today ruling their people.Royal familes and Rolls-Royce.
