Just bought an android phone, it out dated already

If you buy any android phone other than nexus series phones which google makes. Your phone will be outdated within 15 days with a new model.

Being outdated with new releases is one thing but being outdated because the software is not up to date is another thing.

For example an os update that was released 5 months back is still not on the top devices like Samsung galaxy S2 (my phone), Galaxy Note, to this day.

Even now most of the devices being released are coming with previous generation os. Most of the devices are not on Android ICS (latest version of android).

Google could implement these rules to rectify the situation.

1. Google should make it mandatory that all new phone sold should be on latest os (exceptions can be made for budget phones below $90-$70)

2. Google should look into customizations being made by the companies and limit it to basic home screen and widget customization. Which in turn will help the companies to implement latest firmwares faster.

3. Give an option to the user to switch to pure android version during initial setup. This should have been done when android was just starting. But they can make this a strick rule from now on.

4. Mandatory support to all devices sold for at least one year, if possible two years with latest firmware.

Manufactures could implement this rule themselves, give user an option to pay $30-$50 extra  and get a pure android version and support for latest firmware for two years.

Manufactures get more money and users can really take advantage of their device.

If you read reports like this you wonder where Google’s loyalty lies. If they want to save android from fragmentation hell hole this is the only way out.

Until then stick to Nexus series, teach manufactures like Samsung, HTC, Motorola and others a lesson or switch to iOS or Windows Mobile.

Don’t drop your apple device

I am big apple fanboy, I have most of their devices, until recently i had no issues with any of them.

But few days back i dropped my iPod Nano and the screen cracked. I really was surprised that the screen was broken. It has taken quite a few knocks without any issues.

So was sad to see it broken, took it to repair hoping i will have to pay 1500 – 2500 Rs to replace the glass.

Guess how much it is?

It will cost me 7500 Rs, they can’t repair the device they will just give me a new one which costs 8500 Rs at 7500 Rs.

It was still under warranty so i thought i would get some kind of benefit. But no luck.

Finally i contacted iRepair and they are asking 3500 Rs. Which is way better than what apple is offering.

So all i am saying is don’t drop your apple device.

Xbox 360 new strategy do this in India

Xbox 360 is still a costly console to own for many Indians.

They are offering a free xbox with Nokia Lumia purchase why haven’t they did something like this in India. This will give them a big marketshare in India.

There was a lot of talk about xbox live allowing to rent games in India. Which as far as i know was never implemented. It wouldn’t work because most game are over 4 Gb to download and not many people have high speed broadband connections with unlimited data for this to work in India.

I got the xbox before wifi was standard feature, so i didn’t connect it to internet. Just did recently via network cable, demos are big 1-2 Gb download.

Offer a game renting service similar to gamefly in India. This will get people into looking at gaming as a budget friendly service. This could a big revenue for Microsoft gaming in India.

There is a big market for netflix like service in India. With broadband adaptation so slow a service like netflix or gamefly could really take off in India.

Hope someone at Microsoft’s xbox india team is listening to this. Its not like you will loose much, the 360 is on its last legs anyway.

If it works you could bring the new console on day 1 and have a big market share in India.

People all ready are paying 500 per month for DTH. So if you can provide game rental service at those prices you could really make some money. Gamefly $7.95 (350) and netflix $7.99 (400) charge similar prices in US.

One console to rule them all

After reading this article in which John Davison on why Microsoft, Nintendo, or Sony may not stay in the console business much longer

It got me thinking, I can’t afford to buy 3 console every few years like everyone else. Even if i buy 3 consoles buying all the games on them to play, you need some serious money.

It cost 20000 Rs to get each console and 1000-3000 Rs per game. That make this hobby cost more than 1 lakh rupees. Not counting additional services like the xbox live etc.

How nice would it be if we had one console, the software on the console will be designed by Microsoft. But the hardware the console will be made by Sony and Nintendo will only do games for this console. No console of their own.

We as consumers get the best from each of the companies.

Microsoft’s software platform building capabilities and developer tools

Sony’s Hardware expertise and high quality hardware

Nintendo’s fun games to play.

All at a reasonable price because you will not be paying for 3 consoles, instead just 1 console and all the games.

Will this ever happen no it will not, we can always dream right.

Sad trend of remakes and sequels

In hollywood this trend has been going for a few years now. But its starting to take off in India too now.

Its surprising the number of remakes being made within few months of the original.

I don’t mind seeing movies that are dubbed into other languages, don’t remake them again and again.

One such example, many more are out there

in Malayalam as Katha Parayumpol (2007)
in Tamil as Kuselan (2008)
in Telugu as Kathanayakudu (2008)
in Hindi as Billu (2009)

Ghajini, SingamKakkakuyil (made into Golmal) etc

There are many such incidents, either movie makers are out of ideas or getting lazy.

Sequels are also becoming a trend. But most of them have not worked so far luckily.

As a moviegoer we are the ones responsible for this trend. Let us all stop watching sequels and remakes, may be then they will start making new movies with original stories.

Here are some ideas for new movies, just take a history book and look at the number of kings and queens in them. Make movies about them.

Jodha Akbar, which was beautifully made was a big hit. We have such a great culture why are more movies not being made about that.

Audience will appreciate a movie if its made with care. Stop making sequels and remakes and you stop watching them.

Bajaj Auto RE60 could be huge

It’s a new car being developed by Bajaj, even though they claim it’s not a car. It look like a car, has four wheels like a car. Don’t think Nano think more in the vain of Mahindra’s Reva.

They claim it has a mileage of 35 kmpl, if this is true. This car could be huge in cities and metros.

If they price it right under 1 lakh, there is a big market for such vehicles. With parking becoming more and more an issue, vehicles like this could take off.

A good mileage will only help the matter, If they can keep the price under 1 lakh. This could sell in big numbers.

The only issue I have with it, is the style of it. It looks ugly, check out the Tata Pixel the new concept car from Tata. If nano looked like that it could have been a huge hit.

Click here to know more about Tata Pixel

Why does RE60 look so ugly, why can’t it be designed like the Tata pixel, it’s not like people are going to drive this on highway. It will be mostly used in cities under 50 kmph speeds.

So they can add full fibre glass body and not worry about the structure or safety of the car. It will be much safer than the two wheelers.

Can you imagine the sales of a car that looks like Tata pixel costs under 1 lakh and give you 35 kmpl.

2011 a personal year review

Last year in every sense was a bad year, personally for me.

But when I look back there are some amazing things that I did even in a bad year. May be this will help you look back at your life and realize that it wasn’t all that bad after all.

Some of the highlights this year for me were.

Attended two world cup matches

This was a dream of mine, to attend at least 1 world cup match. I saw both of the matches in Chinnaswami Stadium, Bangalore. It’s a 5 hour-long journey for me to get to the ground and was totally worth it.

I saw India V/S Ireland & Australia V/S Canada

For India match I went with friends and for Australia match I went with family. It was really an amazing experience. Glad I went last year, I would have had to wait at least 20 years for next world cup in India, if I missed this one.

Drove car for 450 Kms in a single day.

My biggest drive ever. It took 7 hours. I went to Maruti driving school for a week and then did this drive. Had my license for 6 years but didn’t have the confidence for a big drive.

I did a bike ride of same distance 3 years back. But 4 wheels is the way to go given the Indian road conditions.

It was so liberating, there is nothing like going for a long drive to put your life in perspective. The vehicle was Maruti SX4 by the way.

Been waiting for this at least 6 years.

Watched a new movie on the release day

I was always afraid to go to movies on a release day because of the crowd. But this time i made an exception and tried it.

I still don’t recommend it, if you want to watch the movie peacefully, too much noise from fanboys. I wouldn’t go for one again.

I am not writing about the movie because it was a shitty one. And I don’t want to give it any more publicity. This was three months back.

But glad I did it once to see what the fuzz was about. But I prefer quietness in theaters so this experience is not for me.

Started stock trading

I always dreamt of doing trading. Thought it would be a good match with my personality. Even though it didn’t go the way I wanted.

Could not have chosen a worst time to begin trading, but you have to start somewhere right.

Glad I started trading.

Started uploading videos to YouTube

I always wanted to review new gadgets and mobiles. Luckily Nokia started sending a few review units Nokia N97 MiniNokia X7Nokia BH 905i.

Luckily my youtube channel was approved for advertising this year.

More videos coming in 2012…

See even in a bad year there were so many good things. What were yours comment away.

Hoping both you and I will get to do many new things this year.

India mourns Steve Jobs

All the major English newspapers lead with this story. And it was featured on the front page. For a company that has no official store this is remarkable.

Save these newspapers you will not be seeing anything similar for any CEO in a long time to come.

Apple still is a luxury brand only the wealthy in India can afford, but every middle class family dreams of day when they can afford a apple device like the iPhone or the iPad etc.

Even though the mp3 players are quite popular in India, there are very few takers for the pricey computers and laptops.

This post and the story in newspapers only goes to show how big of an impact Steve Jobs has had all over the world.

For me personally he was a design and marketing genius i admired very much. I have followed all the live apple events, through live blogs all through the night since 2003.

And again saw the full press event video in the morning, hoping i would one day afford one of these devices.

Now i am an apple fan boy with iPad, Macbook air, iPod Touch, iPod Nano and iMac that i am still currently using. Didn’t buy the iPhone 4 because of the jail breaking issues.

Twice every year it was like christmas for me when apple announced their press event. Even though i was not going to buy all the products. I loved waiting for that date and staying up late to watch Steve deliver his pitch perfect presentations and his magical products.

For me personally my Santa Claus has died so there won’t be any Christmas any more.

RIP Steve we & I personally miss u and your presentations and products. It will not be same with your…

How to make windows mobile no 1 mobile OS

Microsoft has put in all the necessary features in windows mobile 7. But its still not the no.1 mobile operating system out there. So how can they make it into one.

Windows mobile has all the talking points of other systems good hardware, apps, notification, over the air updates. Even a program similar to iTunes to sync with PC.

So what’s stopping them from taking the No.1 spot

Apps

Not all the major apps are still on WM. No dropbox, evernote etc. Even big media companies has no apps on WM. No CNN, Nytimes, BBC etc. All these have official apps for other operating systems.

Solution

Microsoft recently paid Nokia 1 Billion dollars. So it’s not short on cash, with this money. It could encourage the big apps on other platforms to come to WM. If they are still not interested lend your developers and make apps for them. Make sure all the features of WM are supported on the apps like live tiles, notifications, upcoming multitasking etc.

You don’t have to do 10000 Application just 50 or 100 top applications that are being used heavily on other platforms.

This will make sure people who want to try WM don’t have any excuse.

Updates

Lack of updates and the 1 update that has been released so far was filled with problems and roll out issues.

Solution

Since windows has already set a basic benchmark for the hardware it can’t be that hard updating it. Rather than wait for 1 big update, push smaller updates until you catch up with others. Put 1 update a month with whatever features are finished.

This will keep it in the news, which in turn will encourage more customers to try it out.

iTunes

On windows they have Zune software and on mac there is a windows phone connector 7. The mac version of the software is basic.

Solution

You have enough programmers to push a full iTunes like software for WM. So try to get that out as soon as possible on both PC & mac. It should have support for applications & media syncing.

When apple can simultaneously push windows and mac iTunes software why can’t a big company like Microsoft.

Online Application Store

There is none at the moment and all the other mobile operating systems have one.

Solution

It can’t be that hard for Microsoft to implement this. Make it something similar to Android one. Where when users install app from the website they are pushed to the device.

All the things i mentioned can be easily done by a company as big as Microsoft. When Android & Apple are updating their operating system so quickly and so fast. Microsoft can’t take the 1 update a year route.

Windows Mobile 7 will be a the mobile OS to beat

Microsoft recently announced the mango update for their Windows mobile 7 phone. They are adding some 500 new features to the OS. Unlike other OS, Windows mobile has all the basic features to make it a good mobile OS already built in. But with mango update they taking it one step further.

Here are the things Windows Mobile 7 will have with mango update that others don’t & will not for the foreseeable future.

Watch the blog post to understand the blog post better.

Widgets

Widgets that are easily to access and don’t need to be installed separately (unlike android). Once you install an app, when you pin the app to the start page. If it has widget it will show up automatically.

With the update they are giving more power to this widget system. Now each individual page can have a widget or item can have a widget. See the video below to understand it fully.

Contextual menus

They are implementing this into the api. What does this mean. Once you install twitter, facebook, yahoo mail, messengers etc. When ever you want to share something just look at the menu. And if the app has implemented this api you can use that app to share the link. This doesn’t stop with links only, it could be photos & videos etc. So you can share a link to twitter, facebook, you blog, messenger etc from any app.

For example you can take the picture from the default app and share it with twitter. You don’t have to go to that app specifically to do this. Shoot video and share it with any app you like vimeo or youtube etc.

Bing Search

You might say google has done a good implementation of search on android. But when you compare it with Bing on Mango update its not even close. They are adding Bing Vision which is similar to Google gooogles. But its built into the search app, its not a separate app like on android.

You point your camera at a book and you will be given the search results. When you want to buy you just click and you will be taken to amazon book store. Even google can’t do that level of integration. When you search for a movie. If you have IMDB app installed. You can directly jump to the app for the results. IMDB app will have the movie page opened with all the details. Its kind of Universal search that any application can take advantage of with api.

Another example is you could search for an mp3 and directly jump to Amazon mp3 store to purchase it. Right from bing, all other app have to do is implement this api and their stores could also be used by the customer.

These three features are not implemented yet by any of the other mobile OS makers like Apple, HP Or Google.

I didn’t write about IE9 because other carriers can update their browsers. But the above mentioned stuff is built into the OS. It will be hard for others to implement them without rewriting their OS.
