Mac is hard, believe me

I never thought getting things done in mac would be this hard. First i must confess i am coming from windows 7 to mac. So it would always be a struggle. Some of the small things you take for granted with a windows machine are hard to do with a mac.
For example something as simple as a paint program. There is none on mac that comes bundled, i really was surprised. How hard can it be to make a paint program like windows paint.
Second thing i realized pretty soon is most useful apps are paid ones. Mine might be a specific case because i have a strange problem and needs for application.
Here are the things i wanted to do on a mac and the stuff i couldn’t do.
Renaming multiple files – There is no easy way of doing it. On windows select all the files and hit F2 and give a name and windows renames all the files. On mac you have to go and create a automator action to this. Which i did and it only worked the way i want after some tweaks. This shouldn’t be that hard. There is a free program on windows called Fsresize which allows you to do with with more control. Like the order in which you want to put your photos etc. So far i haven’t found a program to do it for free.
Resizing Images and watermarking them – I think most people now a days do that. There are some free alternative that do that but my was a special case i want a image water mark. In windows i used to do it with Fsresize which is a free program. It has so many features. There is nothing that comes close on mac, you can whip up some automator programs but you will have to make compromises. I have tried every way, finally i settled for Imagewell which is a big compromise compared to windows free program Fsresize.
Search and replace html pages – there is a free program for windows called notepad++ which does this very well. But on mac there are half arsed programs like Text wrangler etc that do it. But not as good and simple as Notepad++. Hope someone ports this free app to mac. Many paid options are available but i am not interested in them i want free alternatives.
Image editing – As i mentioned earlier there is no native program like paint to edit images. But luckily there are some free alternatives. The best one out there is Seashore which is a free program that allows you to work with transparent images which is what i wanted to do. Here too paid apps are available but are very expensive or some times too limited.
Indian Language support – I just want to read them, i don’t even need native support just browser support for this. But that too doesn’t work. So i had to use parallel and run windows to get Indian languages.
No email programs – Here too i have strange problem i think many have, i have to check multiple yahoo, gmail and hotmail accounts. On windows i used to do it with pop popper a free program. But on mac there is no alternative for this, even programs like Yahoo pop don’t work on mac.
No good ftp program – on windows there are many free alternatives. On mac i am using a firefox add on called fireftp to do ftp. Which is a sad state of affairs. I know there are free programs like cyberduck etc but they don’t work as well as fireftp which is sad and shameful.
And the final big one is Blogging – On windows there is windows live writer which is the best blogging software out there, but on mac there is no alternative for this not even paid ones are that good. So all i can do here is hope Microsoft brings a mac version of this program soon. At the moment i am using scribefire a firefox add on to do the blogging on mac.
There are many more nagging things like the lack of support for data cards from airtel, reliance, etc. Small programs like iphone browser, autotext, etc. Since mac doesn’t have such big market share many don’t even bother about making the drivers or a mac version of their software.
When i decided to move to mac i never thought i would have to make so many compromises. It was so tempting to move back to windows by installing windows on mac.
There are many good things about mac, but only if you are willing to work with the operating system limitations which are every where. Unlike windows where you can do what ever you want which ever way you want.
I will soon write about apps i am using on mac which make it at least tolerable to use a mac.
But the Apple hardware is excellent, i love my aluminum mac book its gorgeous and when mac is running on it. It last for more than 6 hours on battery. So far that is the only thing keeping me from switching to windows.
Mac is fine for you, if you just want to write some stuff and listen to music and movies and browse a little. If you want to do anything little complicated you are out of luck with mac. You will find road blocks everywhere.

Twenty 20 Malayalam movie is a must watch
This film is known for starring all the major actors in the Malayalam movie industry. It was made by actor Dileep’s production house and is a must watch for any Malayalam movie fan.
According to the reports this movie was made to raise funds for the AMMA which is Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes. All the actors in the movie worked without any pay. A really nice way to generate fund for a movie organization.
The movie was a huge success collecting 2.5 crores on the first day and 10 crores in the first week of release. So hope they will make more such movies in future with all star cast.
More about the movie.
Its a murder thriller with quite a bit of comedy thrown into the mix. Its been quite long since I had so much fun watching a Malayalam movie. I thought it might not have a good story and would be boring with cameo roles from the stars.
But that was not the case all the stars are important to the story and they excel in their roles.
I don’t think other movies industries can achieve such a film because of the egos of the stars. So its really nice to see actors acting and not worrying about their images.
Its a must watch, I will also be getting a DVD of this movie because its a keeper. Things like this don’t happen everyday, so don’t miss it.
Cool iphone timer feature in 2.2 firmware
I am not sure if this is a new feature or not. But this is the first time I have noticed it.
If you look in the clock app of the iphone in the timer feature, if you select the option to set the ring tone now there is a option to put to "sleep ipod".

Which means you stop the music after a certain time. This is a cool feature I was searching for in other app’s. Once you set timer the music is stopped without any warnings or beeps.
Now I can put the iphone on 15 min timer and sleep. After 15 min the iphone timer will stop the music and I can dream on.
I didn’t see this feature mentioned any where else that is the reason for writing this post.

Unlock and upgrade your iphone to 2.2
I did it just now. And it went smoothly.
Here are the links you will need to get things going.
First the iphone dev team have with in a day after the official release of the iphone firmware have released a software to jailbreak and unlock the iphone.
Go here for the software and to know what you need to do to jail brake your iphone.
Once you download the software from iphone dev team. Which is around 16 Mb, you will need the actual 2.2 firmware from apple.
Go here to get the direct links to the iphone firmware which you can use to download using any download manager for fast downloads.
The 2.2 firmware is 250 Mb download.
Using itunes restore you iphone. Select the shift key on your keyboard and click the restore button in itunes. And itunes will ask you to select the firmware. Select the firmware you just downloaded and it will do the rest.
Once iphone reboots it will be updated but locked, to unlock and jail brake read on.
Run quickpwn it will ask for the firmware, point to it and then it will ask you what installer you want to use and also give you the unlock option.
The it will ask you for the 3.9 and 4.6 bootloaders which you can download from here, they are very small downloads. Once you select both the files quickpwn does the rest.
And you should have a jail broken and unlocked iphone. If itunes gives error in restoring, just select it as a new iphone and it should work fine.
Thank you iphone dev team for such a simple program and thank you Apple for such a cool iphone.

zoomin.com print your digital photos online
I was looking for a site to get my digital photos printed. I heard of zoomin and thought I will give them a try. using their service is pretty simple. Just go to the website and create an account. Once done upload your pictures and just print them. You can choose any size for a photo or get all the photos in the same size. 4×8 is what I got my photos printed, they are charging 4 Rs per photos. I got 100 photos printed for 450 Rs or so including shipping.
I enquired about the price outside in a photo studio. They said it will cost 180 Rs to get a roll developed. That is 32 photos which comes to 5 Rs, which is costlier than the zoomin guys. The best part is you pay them online and forget about it and in a two days time the photo come to you in courier. They promise same day deliver in cities. No more going to drop the photos and picking them up again etc. When I received the package, it had the albums in them and also a paper photo stand for one photo which is a nice touch.
And the quality was also really good. you can even choose different type of finishes when you buy online.
They even advice you how big you can go with your photos. When you go for a bigger size, if the photo is small they warn you not to print it at that size.
You can get t-shirts and coffee mugs, calendar etc printed with your photos. Even greetings can be printed with your photos which I will be using this new year. The price is a bit high for these stuff but I guess they are premium stuff.
This is the best way to get digital photos printed in India at the moment. No worry or hassle, they have apps to upload photos to their site and even their online uploading works really well. I uploaded around 100 photos of 52 mb in 15 minutes or so. Which is really fast and easy.
They even had an offer so I got a 2 GB pen drive free. So give this a try a very nice service to get your photos printed in India at very reasonable price.
Things I would like them to improve
Offer laminated photo frames or other frame options. Also put a illustration that show the different photo sizes you offer. Its not like all are photographers and understand how big a 4×8 size would be. Why not put a faq that would show how big a photo would be with real objects. like a 4X8 size photo would be as big as a postcard etc. If you can do a pictorial comparison it would be easier for people to order and also this will encourage them to get bigger prints. rather than saying 16X12 if you say as 40 inch TV etc it would be easier for non photo experts to understand.
All in a very neat service which I will be using quite often.
Quantum of solace movie review
New bond movie is here. It’s an interesting one with more brutal fights and some good action. The story continues from where it was left off in the last movie. It’s bonds time to take revenge now, and he does that with style and brutality that only the new bond is capable of. I like how the bad guys are rooted in reality and not in fantasy like other movies like snow castles etc. This makes it even more interesting. Like everything in bond movies the bond girls have also changed. They are not drop dead gorgeous like previous movies they have more substance to them. All in all a fun entertainer and the new bond Daniel Craig is really getting better and better with each movie.
So it’s worth a watch.
Sathyam Cinema the entertainment paradise
Sathyam cinema was the best place to watch movies in Chennai. Now they have gone ahead and made it even more better by adding a gaming section. The 4,5,6 floors at Sathyam cinema now offer gaming arcade called Blur. They have a pc gaming section a console gaming section and an arcade gaming section. They even have a two lane bowling alley and restaurant and a snack bar too.
You have to register by paying 100 Rs and you get a blur card with 80 Rs which you can use. Here are the charges.
Pc gaming 1 hour 60 Rs
Consoles 1 hour 60 Rs
Arcade depends upon each game
Bowling 100 Rs per game
Weekends the prices go up a little higher.
On pc you can play all the latest games like crysis, call of duty etc.
On wii they offer Mario cart wii sports and other games
On Xbox 360 and Ps 3 they offer all the latest games like fifa 09, gears of wars etc.
They have some cool arcade games that I have not seen anywhere else. They have about 30 or so arcade gaming systems.
If you have not seen or played wii this could be the best way to give it a try. You can play with your buddy in a two player game.
If you don’t want to play for 1 hour you can stop when ever you want and continue that later when you have time. You can carry on balance for up to one month.
They even have special deals like 300 Rs for unlimited gaming for one day that’s for consoles only not arcade.
The snack bars too offer some very cool stuff to eat which you can order as you are playing and they will bring them to you.
And the friendly staff are more than willing to help you.
All in all a very good place to spend some time with friends. And best way to try out all the gaming consoles.
There is no way you can offered all three of them so this could be the way you try the other systems.
Try and avoid weekends if you don’t like crowds. They don’t allow taking pictures which is a shame because it could bring such publicity. Even though they have hoardings at the theatre. Lack of advertising of their gaming arcade is surprising.
I only came to know about it because I visit their website to book tickets. Its also quite surprising how many people still buy tickets at the counter. That too is not promoted well enough.

Google phone launches and its called G1
Unless you have been living under a rock you would have known about the G1. Google’s first android phone.
Here is engadget first look, Mossberg’s review and Google’s own press release.
Here is my review even though I don’t have it in my hand from the videos and other review this is what I think about G1.
Hard disk space : 1 Gb onboard and can be expanded with memory card which is bad. Iphone comes with 8 GB at the low end so they should have aimed few Gigs more than that. That is seriously an issue for a device that wants to become a smart phone.
No Video play back or No native video recorder. Hopefully some one will develop apps for that, but they should come with the Android by default.
No head phone jack that’s really a bad miss.
And a 1 GB limit on the data usage on 3G network (and we thought iphone had issues with data usage), you have to be kidding me.
If you can look past those issue you will get a phone that is open source and will have a open market place for apps.
Android is cool but way too many ways to navigate. With keyboard, the joy stick, touch screen. And no standards for buttons or ui. So only geeks will love it and use it unlike the iphone which can be easily used by a novice.
So it’s not just the device the UI also has issue. Now I know why apple didn’t put a keyboard on iphone. There is no way to make it look cool and still keep clean ui and user experience.
In India these phones will take time to come and will cost upwards of 30000 Rs because that’s what most of the high end HTC phones cost in India at the moment.
My advice is wait for a better device, and give android time to make improvements. Google always makes things better with updates like gmail, docs, calendars etc. So hope android will also get better with both devices and the operating system in few months time.
Until then get an iphone and have fun.
Google chrome my review

Last night I downloaded goggle’s new browser. Its only 7 Mb download which was good. But it took a while for me to download on the slow dial up connection I had. I guess many people might have been downloading it.
So what do i have to say about the chrome browser. Its fast, loads fast almost as quick as the ie or better. And it looks very simple as you can seen from the screen shot. I have enabled the bookmark bar, if it was not enabled it would look even simple which is really cool by the way.
The webpages loads fast so far i have not seen a single site that had issues with the browser. The digg.com loads very fast compare to other browsers. Most of the other sites load quickly and its not an issues.
It remembers password and in a good way. Only once you successfully log into an account will it ask you if you want to save the password.
There is no bookmark manager but you can drag them on to the bookmark bar and rename them make folders etc.
Things i love about Chrome.
Its size, only 7 Mb and its simple and clean UI.
It has a task manager to see which tab is taking how much memory etc.
If one tab crashes only that tab has to be close not the whole browser.
You can see history as a webpage with timings and date neatly laid out. In fact the best way to look at history of your browsing on any browser.
The main page is done write. It automatically loads the 9 most visited sites in the main page. You don’t have to add them like opera. There is no way to edit or remove them, which is fine with me.
All in all i love this browser. My only issue is Google reader doesn’t work. I login and it goes to that page but nothing loads. Its works fine on other browsers so i am not sure what the issues is. Hope it gets fixed soon.
Other things like gmail etc work great. You can also save a short cut to any site on your desktop. And return to it when you click that shortcut. This turns Google chrome into an application.
You can log into gmail and make a shortcut for it and close the browser. Next time you click that shortcut it takes directly to your inbox. The browser in which its opens is clean, it doesn’t show address bar or anything just your mail. Which makes it like an application for all your web stuff.
You can save a shortcut to a your Google document and put in on your desktop or start menu. Next time you click that link it takes you directly to the document if you have not signed out.
This feature alone makes it the best thing since slice bread. With this feature you can official switch to Google docs from Microsoft word. You will never loose you documents and will have access to them any where you want. And using Google gears which comes with the browser you can even work offline.
Just select offline from the Google docs page and it will download all the documents and you can work offline. When you are done just connect and go online.
All in all a great browser my only request to Google is don’t add any more features and make it slow, big and ugly.
It has already become my default browser. I still keep safari, firefox and ie just in case.
