2008 Olympics begin today in Beijing, China

Even google is getting into olympic spirit with special logo The opening ceremony will begin today at 5:30 PM Indian time. It will be broadcast live from National Stadium in Beijing.

I just bought a Samsung 40 inch flat screen TV to watch the Olympic games. Sadly there are no HDTV providers in India at the moment so I will have to do with tata sky.

The program will be aired on DD sports and DD national. Its sad none of the top sports channels like espn and star sports get to cover the Olympics in India and we will have to endure doordarshan’s crappy coverage.

Hopefully this years games will be exciting and India will be able to get more than one Gold medal.

It will also be interesting to see how many games will be interrupted by protesters from Tibet and Human Rights groups.

Sites you should check out for Olympics coverage.

Spain win Euro 2008 and Football is fun again

Euro 2008 Winners Spain

What a final. The two best teams in the tournament reached the final. Rather than it being a cagey final. It was free flowing with wonderful attacks, passes and defense.

All through the game Germany looked threatening but Spanish midfielder’s had a wonderful game and they completely dominated the Germans. The Spanish had superior attacking and passing skill.

Both the keepers were very good at keeping the game to 1:0. Spain could have easily had three or four goals if not for Lehmann. Similarly Germany’s set pieces were made ineffective due to some good goal keeping by Casillas.

It was a win for the Spanish skill and for the wonderful Game of Football. A final to remember and a fitting one for this wonderful Euro 2008.

Spain V/S Germany in Euro 2008 final

euro2008 final

After watching an exciting tournament. This seem like a fitting finale to end it. Both teams are here because they were brilliant and not because of some lucky strike. So here is my outlook for the final which takes place on June 29th.

Both the team have come from bad situations to win the games. So both the team will not give up that easily.

Here are the strengths of two teams

Germany : Tall, Super stickers in Podolski, Schweinsteiger, Klose and Ballack in some sense. Very good defensively too.

Spain: Innovative and young forwards like Torres, David Silva. And wonderful midfielder’s like Iniesta, Xavi, Fàbregas, Senna and a super keeper in Casillas.

I think this game will have similar result to what Germany did to Portugal. Germany will win it easily with their height and set pieces. Spain will struggle to cope with this due to their weak defense. Germany will not allow Spain to play their free flowing passing game. So Spain will resort to shots from outside the box which they are not good at. This is what they did against Portugal and that is exactly what they will do against Spain and win.

Even though my heart want the Spain to win my head says its Germany.

2008 predictions, hoping they will come true

These are the predictions i think will happen or hope they happen in 2008

Technology : Something even special from apple than the iphone. I think there will some new laptop that everyone on the planet will want. More online stuff from Microsoft. They are better at stuff if they put their minds to it. Look at the Live write its the best blog writer out there. So hoping they will do many more such exciting things. Other online stuff will be the same, i don’t expect any new big things like Facebook. Most of the sites will try to consolidate their user base. You will see a lot of uproar on privacy as these sites try to lock down. I expect amazon to do a lot this year, they have started offering software as downloads for sale now and already have the best DRM free Mp3 store. Many companies will try hard but will not be able to beat the iphone’s onslaught.

Sports: Real Madrid look stronger as a team and they will win the league and the Champions Leagues this year. The Australian cricket team will continue its winning ways. India will again struggle at least with one or two big name retirements. Olympics in China will be marred with protest and drug scandals.

Politics: The Iraq quagmire will continue. The politically situation will get worse around the world as you saw in Kenya as the stakes in politics go up. Pakistan will still struggle with democracy. Democrats will win in America, it will be Hillary Clinton.

Climate: Expect more proof from mother nature about Climate Change.

Economy: USA will find it hard to get back to its glory days as other countries catch up to it. Elections will only add to the distraction.

Gaming: Microsoft will at least announce their next gaming console. The wii will get a better version. Sony ps3 will finally come to the ring for the real fight.

Movies: Movies will struggle to get audiences due to piracy and lack of interest. More animated stuff will rule the roost.

Television: If the writers strike continues it will be hard to tell. But it will be sorted out soon and we will be able to sit our lazy ass again in front of our huge ass tv’s.

Music: More non mainstream music will come on to the top charts. Apple will also play a major role in this.

We will wait and see how my predictions will go. Chime in with your own.

Year 2007 in review

What a year it has been in every way. Let me look at some of the areas I am interested in, and after the new year I will also write a predication post for the year 2008

Technology : This year saw bill gates retire from Microsoft. The release of iphone (God phone). The dominance of Google and rise in popularity of Facebook. Vista troubles dotcom bubbles etc.

Sports: Saw India finally deliver something, 20-20 world cup for all the hype about them. Saw Real Madrid win the Spanish league after a long draught. Saw the demise of Chelsea and rise of Arsenal. Problems in Italian football and the juggernaut of Australian cricket. The destruction of cycling and athletics with drug scandals. Rugby world cup came and went no one really cared because of the stupid TV restrictions.

Politics: The Iraq quagmire continues, Many leading nations saw their leaders change. Political unrest continues world over. Terrorism is on the rise especially in Asia.

Climate: The global warming seem to be hitting home not with big disastrous but with little annoyances. Luckily one of the bigger storms fizzled off, how many more can we dodge only God knows.

Economy: USA see to headed for recession and the world in particular Russia and Asia seem to in the midst of prosperity.

Gaming: Delays continue lack of availability manufactured or now continue at least for wii. Halo 3 and some surprise hits in Orange Box, Mass Effect and Bio Shock kept this year interesting. Rise of Handheld Gaming and casual games continues.

Movies: Big name movies disappoint some got a bit of our money and excitement from us. But not such a great year for movies.

Television: Seems to be on the rise again after the years of tivo and sitcoms. But it will take more such years for it to get back to its glory days.

Music: Seem to be helping bring the changes, but only to sell more of it. Lack of expression or thought continues.

All in all not a good year in my opinion. We have seen better years. And will see better years. Wish you all a Happy New Year and a more exciting one at that. Watch out for my New Year Predictions.

Gary Kirsten as a coach

When you think BCCI cannot go wrong at least in picking a new coach. They go and surprise all of us by choosing South African opening batsmen as their new coach. Seriously do the think he has such good credentials, then why didn’t SA choose him. They didn’t think much of him he wasn’t even offered captaincy. But we think he is good enough to coach our team. All I can say is good luck, bring more spineless people to coach the team. If nothing we have someone to blame for our loses.
