First time Plane journey for the new indian passenger
If you are a new passenger who is for the first time taking a flight. Here are the things to look out for and the procedure of boarding you maiden voyage.
First getting tickets you can get a ticket online or directly at the airport.
Once you buy the ticket online just make a print of it and bring it to airport.
Once you reach airort if you haven’t bought your ticket you can buy it here.
There are trolly like the ones at super markets where you can put your luggage and drag it rather than carrying it like i did.
Keep your photo ID and ticket ready because you will asked for it at the counter and sometimes even at the entrance of the airport.
Once inside check you luggage first, which is just taking you luggage for scanning where it will be scanned and tagged.
Then go to the counter to get your boarding pass. Their you can also check in your luggage.
Once you get it just go and wait for your plane.
Before you are taken to runway they will ask for your boarding pass. You will again be asked for boarding pass when you are about to enter the plane.
You will have to switch off your electronic device while taking off and landing.
Best part about the taking off for me is the speed the plane gets when on runway. It feels like you are in a racing car strapped and all.
Once the place takes off the run way you will definitely feel it. Its pretty similar to the experience you will have when you ride a roller coaster.
If you have a good pilot you will rarely feel the altitude adjustments (plane adjusting its height by either going up or coming down a bit ) which are hard to get used to for the first time.
Same thing goes for the landing. The landing part is pretty staright forward, but the altitude adjustment before the landing is pretty scary for the first time user.
Once you land you will be taken from the run way and you can collect your luggage that was tagged on a conveyer belt like you see in the movies.
Then just walk out of the airport and you are done with the maiden flight.
Which i took recently, Try and fly new airlines like Kingfisher at least for the first time. It make a lot of difference to your first experience. They have new flights even though they cost more than others you will get a better experience out of it.
Pack lightly for the first time, don’t take too many gadgets and things etc.
Don’t eat too much before you fly, if you get motion sickness there is a bag in front of you that you can use to vomit in. To avoid that don’t stuff yourself too much.
Its a special feeling to fly and doing it for the first time is even more special. With prices so cheap you have to fly at least once.

Delhi 6 movie review
Its been quite a while since i saw a good movie especially in Hindi. So i really was surprised how good Delhi 6 turned out to be.
Its such a good take of how the current India is functioning and how the politics are taking over communities that were once harmonies. If this would have won an Oscar i would be really proud of it.
I am not going into the story line because it has many twist that you will enjoy it very much.
It shows all the aspects of India, communities, religion, spirituality, traditions, and the new generation etc.
All the actors and the support artist do justice to their role. Even the Kala Bhandar does its part without ever showing up.
This movie has everything comedy, story, songs and the most important thing a very good message.
If you love movie you have to see this movie. After this movie i saw Billu the barber which was so bad that it makes Delhi 6 even more special.
The songs are by A.R.Rehman (double Oscar winner) and he doesn’t disappoint with any of them. A must watch movie for all Indians.

Amazon Kindle app for iphone Review
This is how the app icon looks and this is the loading screen of the app. This is how the app ui looks. They could have given a sample book or put a manual on how to use the app. So that user would get an idea of how the books look and how to read etc.
You can flip pages like you flip photos, a little bit of animation would have made it even cooler. This is not a e paper device, iphone has a beautiful screen some animation would have really helped.

Once you click get books it will show you how you can get books into the app. You can do it from a computer or a mac. But i wanted to see how easy it was to do it from the iphone browser.

Once you click safari the app exits and loads the amazon site in the browser. I was surprised to see the full amazon site loads rather than the iphone version of the site. Which would have been easier to use.

Once you sign in it takes four pages to get the book on to the kindle app. All the books have the first chapter as samples so i tried one of them. Its not the most easiest process ,they could have made it more easier and provided this in the app itself. That way they could have made it much simpler to get the books. They already have designed their site for iphone, their own amazon app uses it. That could have made this very simple, may be they will do it in future versions.

Once you click on the sample or the book it will show you a confirmation saying that your book will be available from your kindle or iphone now.

Then close the browser and launch the kindle app and you book should appear their in the list of books. Samples download very quickly, i have not tried full book, but i am guessing they too download pretty quickly.

The task bar below automatically hides and gives you full screen to read the book.
All in all i like this app very much they could make it more useful if they put in the ability to put your own documents into the app. That way people will use it for many more things which could help them sell more books. Its free so go ahead and give it a try.

Mac is hard, believe me

I never thought getting things done in mac would be this hard. First i must confess i am coming from windows 7 to mac. So it would always be a struggle. Some of the small things you take for granted with a windows machine are hard to do with a mac.
For example something as simple as a paint program. There is none on mac that comes bundled, i really was surprised. How hard can it be to make a paint program like windows paint.
Second thing i realized pretty soon is most useful apps are paid ones. Mine might be a specific case because i have a strange problem and needs for application.
Here are the things i wanted to do on a mac and the stuff i couldn’t do.
Renaming multiple files – There is no easy way of doing it. On windows select all the files and hit F2 and give a name and windows renames all the files. On mac you have to go and create a automator action to this. Which i did and it only worked the way i want after some tweaks. This shouldn’t be that hard. There is a free program on windows called Fsresize which allows you to do with with more control. Like the order in which you want to put your photos etc. So far i haven’t found a program to do it for free.
Resizing Images and watermarking them – I think most people now a days do that. There are some free alternative that do that but my was a special case i want a image water mark. In windows i used to do it with Fsresize which is a free program. It has so many features. There is nothing that comes close on mac, you can whip up some automator programs but you will have to make compromises. I have tried every way, finally i settled for Imagewell which is a big compromise compared to windows free program Fsresize.
Search and replace html pages – there is a free program for windows called notepad++ which does this very well. But on mac there are half arsed programs like Text wrangler etc that do it. But not as good and simple as Notepad++. Hope someone ports this free app to mac. Many paid options are available but i am not interested in them i want free alternatives.
Image editing – As i mentioned earlier there is no native program like paint to edit images. But luckily there are some free alternatives. The best one out there is Seashore which is a free program that allows you to work with transparent images which is what i wanted to do. Here too paid apps are available but are very expensive or some times too limited.
Indian Language support – I just want to read them, i don’t even need native support just browser support for this. But that too doesn’t work. So i had to use parallel and run windows to get Indian languages.
No email programs – Here too i have strange problem i think many have, i have to check multiple yahoo, gmail and hotmail accounts. On windows i used to do it with pop popper a free program. But on mac there is no alternative for this, even programs like Yahoo pop don’t work on mac.
No good ftp program – on windows there are many free alternatives. On mac i am using a firefox add on called fireftp to do ftp. Which is a sad state of affairs. I know there are free programs like cyberduck etc but they don’t work as well as fireftp which is sad and shameful.
And the final big one is Blogging – On windows there is windows live writer which is the best blogging software out there, but on mac there is no alternative for this not even paid ones are that good. So all i can do here is hope Microsoft brings a mac version of this program soon. At the moment i am using scribefire a firefox add on to do the blogging on mac.
There are many more nagging things like the lack of support for data cards from airtel, reliance, etc. Small programs like iphone browser, autotext, etc. Since mac doesn’t have such big market share many don’t even bother about making the drivers or a mac version of their software.
When i decided to move to mac i never thought i would have to make so many compromises. It was so tempting to move back to windows by installing windows on mac.
There are many good things about mac, but only if you are willing to work with the operating system limitations which are every where. Unlike windows where you can do what ever you want which ever way you want.
I will soon write about apps i am using on mac which make it at least tolerable to use a mac.
But the Apple hardware is excellent, i love my aluminum mac book its gorgeous and when mac is running on it. It last for more than 6 hours on battery. So far that is the only thing keeping me from switching to windows.
Mac is fine for you, if you just want to write some stuff and listen to music and movies and browse a little. If you want to do anything little complicated you are out of luck with mac. You will find road blocks everywhere.

Twenty 20 Malayalam movie is a must watch
This film is known for starring all the major actors in the Malayalam movie industry. It was made by actor Dileep’s production house and is a must watch for any Malayalam movie fan.
According to the reports this movie was made to raise funds for the AMMA which is Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes. All the actors in the movie worked without any pay. A really nice way to generate fund for a movie organization.
The movie was a huge success collecting 2.5 crores on the first day and 10 crores in the first week of release. So hope they will make more such movies in future with all star cast.
More about the movie.
Its a murder thriller with quite a bit of comedy thrown into the mix. Its been quite long since I had so much fun watching a Malayalam movie. I thought it might not have a good story and would be boring with cameo roles from the stars.
But that was not the case all the stars are important to the story and they excel in their roles.
I don’t think other movies industries can achieve such a film because of the egos of the stars. So its really nice to see actors acting and not worrying about their images.
Its a must watch, I will also be getting a DVD of this movie because its a keeper. Things like this don’t happen everyday, so don’t miss it.
Cool iphone timer feature in 2.2 firmware
I am not sure if this is a new feature or not. But this is the first time I have noticed it.
If you look in the clock app of the iphone in the timer feature, if you select the option to set the ring tone now there is a option to put to "sleep ipod".

Which means you stop the music after a certain time. This is a cool feature I was searching for in other app’s. Once you set timer the music is stopped without any warnings or beeps.
Now I can put the iphone on 15 min timer and sleep. After 15 min the iphone timer will stop the music and I can dream on.
I didn’t see this feature mentioned any where else that is the reason for writing this post.

Unlock and upgrade your iphone to 2.2
I did it just now. And it went smoothly.
Here are the links you will need to get things going.
First the iphone dev team have with in a day after the official release of the iphone firmware have released a software to jailbreak and unlock the iphone.
Go here for the software and to know what you need to do to jail brake your iphone.
Once you download the software from iphone dev team. Which is around 16 Mb, you will need the actual 2.2 firmware from apple.
Go here to get the direct links to the iphone firmware which you can use to download using any download manager for fast downloads.
The 2.2 firmware is 250 Mb download.
Using itunes restore you iphone. Select the shift key on your keyboard and click the restore button in itunes. And itunes will ask you to select the firmware. Select the firmware you just downloaded and it will do the rest.
Once iphone reboots it will be updated but locked, to unlock and jail brake read on.
Run quickpwn it will ask for the firmware, point to it and then it will ask you what installer you want to use and also give you the unlock option.
The it will ask you for the 3.9 and 4.6 bootloaders which you can download from here, they are very small downloads. Once you select both the files quickpwn does the rest.
And you should have a jail broken and unlocked iphone. If itunes gives error in restoring, just select it as a new iphone and it should work fine.
Thank you iphone dev team for such a simple program and thank you Apple for such a cool iphone.
